This blog post is about German words and phrases, aversion to technological change, Panopto, VoiceThread, Brightspace, what to do to prepare for upcoming changes, and – first and foremost – why you should get excited about the integrated tools in Brightspace LMS.  

The German word Technikfeindlichkeit – when translated into English – literally means “technology enmity” and serves as an apt description for human attitudes towards technological change in several historical examples: 19th century textile workers in the English midlands who fervently opposed automated looms and knitting frames out of fear of losing work (“Luddites”), Parisian revolutionaries of the July Revolution who smashed lanterns in 1830 out of fear of industrial shifts, the Committee for Liquidation or Subversion of Computers (‘CLODO”) who attacked telecommunications companies for fear of losing personal freedom, and – much more recently – formidable apprehension in 2014 Germany over the ubiquity of Google. 

There is, however, another German phrase from an ad campaign for Audi – Vorsprung durch Technik (“Progress through technology) – which became culturally and historically significant in the post-WWII era as a means of moving on from the past via technological change.  More simply and obviously (and specifically in the context of higher education), technological change can be extremely beneficial for building an online course, organizing course content in multiple formats, and delivering a superior academic experience for students.  

As of July 2026, ITS has made significant progress in the transition from Sakai to Brightspace LMS. This change has, inevitably, inspired a degree of anxiety in many members of the LUC community and prompted many faculty users to worry about delivering a quality product in their courses. Despite these fears, there are many reasons why this change is cause for excitement rather than concern. More specifically and concisely, it is about to get MUCH EASIER to use Panopto and VoiceThread in your classes.  

Panopto in Brightspace 

As a popular lecture capture tool with over fifty thousand hours of recorded content, Panopto plays an essential role in the LUC academic technology ecosystem. Faculty, students, and staff routinely create over three hundred recordings and watch over three thousand hours of content on a weekly basis. Nonetheless, the Panopto integration in Sakai requires several practices that display room for improvement: account authentication, locating content, sharing lectures from a previous term, reviewing analytics, and other practices that –admittedly – have a learning curve for the non-technologically inclined.  The following are some of the improvements to these processes (and more) that are coming with the move to Brightspace:  

• A modern and streamlined integration makes it easier to access, upload, and manage videos without leaving Brightspace.  

• Videos can be embedded throughout Brightspace using the Insert Stuff tool, allowing instructors to place recordings directly into content modules, assignments, discussions, quizzes, and announcements without students having to authenticate their accounts first.  

• Brightspace’s content organization makes it easier to structure video-based learning materials within modules and learning paths.  

• Panopto video quizzes can integrate with the Brightspace gradebook with no need for manual grade entry.  

• Course copy tools help instructors reuse Panopto content when preparing new course offerings, which reduces setup time each semester.  

• Brightspace automatically synchronizes course enrollments with Panopto to ensure students have the correct access to course videos.  

• Instructors can combine Panopto recordings with Brightspace release conditions to create adaptive learning experiences based on student progress.  

• Brightspace’s intuitive content editor makes embedding and updating videos faster and more consistent across the course.  

• Panopto recordings work seamlessly with Brightspace’s responsive interface, which provides consistent experience across desktop and mobile devices.  

• Students can access Panopto videos directly from course content without navigating to a separate video library.  

• Video analytics from Panopto complement Brightspace course analytics. 

• Brightspace’s flexible content management allows instructors to organize videos alongside readings, activities, and assessments in a logical sequence.  

• New instructors often experience a shorter learning curve because Brightspace provides a more modern interface and consistent workflow for adding multimedia content.  

Overall, while Panopto provides the same core recording, hosting, captioning, and analytics capabilities on both platforms, Brightspace offers a tighter and more intuitive integration. Features such as Insert Stuff, streamlined course content management, stronger gradebook integration, and more flexible course organization make it easier for instructors to build video rich courses with less administrative effort than in Sakai. 

VoiceThread in Brightspace 

VoiceThread – a collaborative multimedia slide tool for asynchronous, interactive learning – also plays a crucial role in the LUC technology landscape. Members of the LUC community record (on average) over 200 VoiceThreads and view over 300 hours of content on a weekly basis. Despite the effectiveness and popularity of VoiceThread, many of the same areas for improvement that accompany using Panopto are also true of this tool: challenges with account authentication, occasional issues with submittingcontent, and limitations in navigation. With the coming move to Brightspace, instructors will be able to do all the following tasks: 

• Create VoiceThread assignments directly within Brightspace using an integrated workflow that keeps students in the LMS.  

• Embed VoiceThread presentations into Brightspace content modules so students can access multimedia discussions alongside other course materials.  

• Organize VoiceThread activities within Brightspace modules to make it easier to build structured learning paths.  

• Sync VoiceThread assignment grades with the Brightspace gradebook.  

• Use Brightspace release conditions to make VoiceThread activities available after students complete prerequisite content or assessments.  

• Copy VoiceThread assignments when copying Brightspace courses to make it easier to prepare future course offerings.  

• Automatically synchronize course enrollments so students have access to the correct VoiceThread activities based on their Brightspace registration.  

• Create interactive discussions where students can leave text, audio, or video comments without navigating away from the course site.  

• Combine VoiceThread activities with Brightspace discussions, quizzes, assignments, and other learning materials in a single course module.  

• Use Brightspace announcements and calendar tools to direct students to VoiceThread activities and reinforce participation deadlines.  

• Provide students with a more consistent user experience by accessing VoiceThread through Brightspace instead of managing separate course links.  

• Organize multimedia lectures, peer review activities, presentations, and discussions within the same Brightspace course structure.  

• Reuse VoiceThread presentations and assignments across semesters using Brightspace course copy tools.  

• Simplify course management by keeping VoiceThread content, grades, and instructional materials connected within a single learning environment.  

• Reduce student confusion by providing a single access point for VoiceThread activities through Brightspace navigation.  

Overall, VoiceThread offers the same core capabilities on both learning management systems including multimedia presentations, asynchronous discussions, and interactive commenting. However, Brightspace provides a more cohesive teaching experience by integrating VoiceThread more naturally into course modules, assessments, and the gradebook. This allows instructors to organize multimedia learning activities alongside other course content while streamlining course management and improving the overall student experience.

To prepare for the shift to Brightspace, there are a few things you can do that will make for a smoother transition:  

• Login to Brightspace and get comfortable with the layout. 

• Create a profile at D2L Academy and review the training content.  

• Book an appointment with the Learning Technologies & Innovation team for questions and assistance.
