FTC Lawsuit Forces Changes to Ticketmaster

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken action against Ticketmaster and its parent company, LiveNation, for engaging in deceptive and unfair ticketing practices. These practices inflated ticket prices and enabled brokers to use bots to hoard tickets and mislead consumers through hidden fees. The FTC brought suit against Ticketmaster and it has resulted in changes including banning multiple accounts, shutting down a platform that helps brokers purchase multiple tickets at a time, and increasing pricing transparency.

Too Big to Fail?: Ticketmaster and the Live Entertainment Debacle

After months of near-total silence, Beyonce opened Black History Month with a bang when she finally blessed the Beehive with what they had been impatiently waiting for since the release of her seventh studio album: the announcement of the Renaissance World Tour. Her loyal fans have been anticipating this news since Renaissance was released too much acclaim at the end of July 2022. However, alongside anticipation, fans are battling a strong feeling of anxiety at the prospect of not being able to secure tickets for the coveted shows. And no wonder. Ticketmaster – the vendor through which tickets for the Renaissance tour are being sold – recently, and very publicly, bungled another highly awaited ticket sale.

The Issue with Attorney Conflicts of Interest in the Entertainment Industry

All attorneys, in every jurisdiction in which they are admitted to the bar and in every area of practice, have an obligation to comply with that jurisdiction’s Rules of Professional Conduct.  However, the past few decades have shed light on the unusual practices of attorneys in the entertainment industry, particularly on how they handle conflicts of interest.  Generally, these attorneys encourage clients to waive conflicts of interest, and those clients are all too happy to do so.  This practice only serves to further blur the lines in an already complicated area of legal ethics.
