A Guide to Transportation at Loyola

A Guide to Transportation at Loyola

At some point you will likely be transporting between Loyola’s two campuses- the Downtown Water Tower Campus and the North side of Chicago Lake Shore Campus. To get between Loyola’s campuses there are basically 3 options.

Loyola’s Shuttle.
The shuttle service is really quite good. It takes you straight from the Lake Shore campus to the downtown campus. During the day it leaves every 20 minutes: On the hour, then 20 minutes after the hour, and 20 minutes before the next hour. Around lunch time it works every 15 minutes, and in the evenings it leaves every half hour. I like it because it’s very predictable and all you have to do is check the time and hop on the next shuttle for direct service.

But there are a few downsides to the shuttle. The other two options that I will get to come more often than every 15, 20, or 30 minutes at the times that the shuttle service runs at those frequencies. 15 minutes isn’t too bad, but 20 and 30 minutes is a long wait. The other downside is that the shuttle has to use public roads, which means that during rush hour it gets stuck in rush our traffic. Also, the shuttle service ends at midnight and doesn’t start again until 7:00 a.m.

CTA Red Line

The “El,” or the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA’s) Red Line train is what I would say is the most reliable transportation option. As I said above, the Loyola shuttle service ends at midnight on both campuses and doesn’t start until 7:00. The Red Line runs 24/7.

The wait for the Red Line is usually faster than the shuttle. So, if you just missed the Shuttle, you’ve got better odds taking the Red Line rather than wait 20 minutes for the next Shuttle.

The downside is that it is not a direct line. There are stops right at Loyola’s Lake Shore campus and Downtown Campus (the Chicago & Loyola stops) but you have to make a lot of stops on the way. In addition, you need to be more aware of your surroundings on public transportation.

However, one major advantage to the Red Line is that it doesn’t use public roads; it stays on its own tracks. This means that rush hour traffic or bad weather has no effect on the length of your journey.

The CTA 147 Bus

Your final option is the 147 CTA bus. This is an express bus that runs down Lake Shore Drive. It stops right at the Lake Shore Campus and only 2 short blocks from the downtown campus.

The good news is that this bus also runs more frequently than the Shuttle. Obviously you need to be aware of your surroundings on CTA, but for the most part the 147 is a more exclusive bus (due to its express route) and there are mostly commuters riding.

Since it is express it is faster than the Red Line if there is no traffic. However, if there is a lot of traffic, rain, or snow, the bus ride length will be effected.

So what do I recommend?

If the timing works for you, take the shuttle. It’s the fastest.

If the timing didn’t work and you have to wait more than 10 minutes, take the CTA.

When choosing between CTA routes make your decision based on the time of day. Is it rush hour? Then take the Red Line. Is it not rush hour? Take the 147 express.

About Me

About Me

My name is Antoinette Isama and I am a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago. I am seeking a degree in journalism with a minor in International Studies. I was born and raised in Silver Spring, Md., and my family is originally from Nigeria. I am also the youngest of three in my immediate family, but I have always grown up to know my many members of my extended family as well.

I have always loved reading, writing and telling stories. Growing up the news was always on tv in my house, so I think that is a huge contribution for my interest in journalism. I have also taken an interest in learning about other people’s lives, different cultures other than my own and becoming aware of national and international issues.

Coming to Loyola all the way from the east coast comes with a lot of independence and opportunities. Even though I miss my family at times, my endeavors that I am involved in on campus help me reflect on my journey here and that my distance from home will be worth while.

These endeavors include participating in the many cultural and social justice based groups that Loyola has to offer. I am social chair of the Black Cultural Center, event coordinator of the African Student Alliance, and a social justice advocate in the Empowerment Pipeline program through the department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

These extracurriculars have enhanced my leadership skills and my ability to work as a team with fellow students, as well as sharing the importance of preserving and learning about black culture and African culture with the Loyola community. I have really enjoyed collaborating with other cultural organizations to reach this goal together too.

When I am not in class or in my extracurricular activities I enjoy exploring Chicago. My favorite things to do so far at my time at Loyola have been going to festivals, checking out different restaurants, visiting museums and attending concerts. Being a student also has its perks with these activities too with the discounts!

With the time I have left at Loyola, I hope to have a better sense of where I would like to be in terms of my career as a journalist. I am also very grateful for the resources Loyola offers its students to guide that aspect of the college journey. I also hope to be more involved with the social media and student run publications, such as The Phoenix.

With this blog I hope to share what I do and how I see Loyola. I also hope to put a lot in perspective through my experiences that I go through on a day to day basis.

Enjoy!

Measure For Measure

Measure For Measure

Last night I went to see Loyola’s department of performing arts’s production of Measure For Measure. It was really good! And the best part about it was that one of my good friends was an actress in it!

Measure For Measure is a Shakespearian comedy, and after reading it in class, I was glad I had the opportunity to see it live. It was my first time experiencing a Shakespeare play live and I have new found respect for the actors and actresses in the production.

I thought Shakespeare was hard to read, I can’t imagine having to memorize those lines!

Adler After Dark and Other Adventures

Adler After Dark and Other Adventures

Thursday night my friend, Natalie, decided to come up for the evening to go to at the Adler Planetarium for, Adler After Dark.  This is the friend, who I mentioned in an earlier blog, graduated last semester.  Living in Joliet, she is only a Metra ride away!  I’ve never been, or even heard of the Adler After Dark, but it turned out to be a 21+ event and there was a DJ.

It seems each one also has a theme, and because of its proximity to Valentine’s Day, this one was chocolate. We scored some free chocolate and roamed around where we saw live demonstrations of various experiments, one involving a flower and liquid nitrogen.  There was also plenty of interactive activities and videos.

Friday, Natalie and I woke up just in time for some McDonald’s breakfast.  I don’t know if this is a big deal to anyone else, but within my group of friends, its like one of the greatest accomplishments one can achieve.  On our walk to McDonald’s, we also realized it was a gloriously and unusually nice day, so in addition to the shopping we had planned, we decided to first hit up the Lincoln Park Zoo.

It seems as if some renovation is taking place there, as many of the exhibits were closed, including the penguins!  This did not hinder our trip, as there were many other the animals out  for the beautiful day. Including the flamingos!

Of course, one of my favorite animals to see at the zoo are the meerkats!  They are seriously so cute.  I’ve also noted that compared to the ones in the wild, the meerkats at the zoo have a little something extra in the middle, but that just makes them that much cuter!

After the zoo, we hit up Wow Bao for lunch at Water Tower Place and then got our shop on.  It was a really great day and I hope Natalie can visit again soon enough!

Free Days!

Free Days!

Being that I am a poor college student I prefer to do everything at little to no cost. Due to my economic status, I have become very good at LEGALLY spending little to no money on basically everything in Chicago. From food discounts to just knowing where and when to go places, I have learned it all. Oh, although I am not the biggest fan of Apple’s products, there is totally an app, FREEvents Chicago, for finding cheap things to do in the city.

Here are the free days for all of the best Museums in Chicago:

Museum of Science and Industry

Shedd Aquarium

Adler Planetarium

We Serve

We Serve

Over the past three years I have been involved in countless different service projects. From Loyola, to Chicago and even throughout the world there has really been an infinite amount of opportunities placed in front of me. This last weekend I went to the animal shelter, PAWS Chicago, and spent some time taking care of the animals.

While this was not the most beneficial experience for me as a person, how can you resist these puppies?!?! PAWS is a great organization that is moving to provide homes for pets that would otherwise be euthanized due to overpopulation of the pound. Our job is to walk the dogs five times a day, and make sure that everything in the shelter is well kept, so when potential families come, the dogs can be picked up almost immediately. Berkley was adopted  ten minutes after I took the picture above.

They also need volunteers to run with the dogs and being that I love running and I love dogs, I think I might have found my next service opportunity.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day

Despite this sweet holiday falling on a weekday, my friends and I got “snazzied” up for dinner and a movie.  I didn’t think many people would be out and about Tuesday night, but plenty of couples and groups of friends were dining around downtown.  The original plan was to hit up the Grand Lux, but they do not accept reservations and the hour and a half long wait was too much considering our plans to see “The Vow” later that evening.

Our ingenuity led us to split up and find an equally charming and delicious place that could accommodate our  time constraints.  We ended up at Big Bowl, which doesn’t necessarily have that Valentine’s dinner charm, but the five minute wait what exactly what we needed considering our ensuing hunger.

I was very excited to see the movie, not only because Rachel McAdams is adorable and I love “The Notebook,” but I learned the setting is in Chicago!  I won’t give away anything, but McAdams’ character ends up living in Rogers Park at one point.

Overall, it was a great time!

Venice

Venice

Last weekend, I embarked on my second traveling adventure.  Destination: Venezia. Venezia is Italian for Venice.  My friends and I were looking forward to this trip for weeks because we were going for Carnevale, which we heard was one giant parade/party.

Carnevale is often compared to New Orleans’ Mardi Gras.  Carnevale is Italian for “no meat”, and it goes on for ten days, ending the day before Ash Wednesday.  It is characterized by people in masks and costumes.

It was so cool to look around and see every single person in some kind of unique mask.  Some people were even dressed up.  I saw the most random costumes: people dressed as smurfs,  superheroes and even the Simpsons characters.  My personal favorite was the little girl dressed up in a lion body suit.  So cute! Here is us with some random pink animals.

There was a big parade for Carnevale that went around Saint Mark’s Square.  There was also a huge stage where people in costume sang songs and taught dance moves to the audience so everyone could join in.  My friends and I had a great time dancing.  The Italians have some interesting dance moves!

Besides being Venetians for the weekend and participating in all Carnevale had to offer, I was able to cross something off my bucket list: A gondola ride! It was absolutely amazing and by far my favorite part of my trip abroad thus far.  We sailed around the canal, and ended under the huge Rialto Bridge where all the beautiful houses and buildings are.  It was so peaceful and breathtaking. And it was only twelve euro a person.  It was great to be able to sit in the gondola and just admire all the architecture and beauty of Venice.  (Oh, if you were wondering, our gondola man didn’t sing for us… disappointing, but still so worth it!)

Besides Carnevale and the gondola ride, my friends and I devoured pizza after pizza.  We also shopped and bought little souvenirs for our families and friends.  Venice is beautiful.  I’m so happy I got to be there for the world famous Carnevale, and I’m even happier I got to knock riding a gondola off my bucket list.  I fell in love with Venice and I am definitely going to make a trip back  before Ireturn to the States.

This week seems to have been pretty stressful for everyone I know, myself included. Perhaps that’s because I had a lab practical, my first Foundations of Nursing exam (Fun fact: My teacher’s advice for the exam, “First, find the two right answers. Then, pick the one that is better.”), my first nursing skills competency, and a theology quiz. This all culminated today, with the latter three events taking place within a 10 hour time span.

As a reward to myself, and because I had yet to see anyone besides my trusty nursing textbooks, I decided to “take the night off” to do homework and spend the night with my friends in Georgetown Hall. However, as often happens when we all get together, we ended up spending several hours trolling the internet, with a focus on YouTube cat videos.

For the rest of you who are overwhelmed or stressed or simply want a break, I am posting our favorites here. As any cat would say, “Meow!”*

Looking Forward to Things to Come

Looking Forward to Things to Come

Things have been so busy this past week! I’m beginning to get pretty homesick, and am very much looking forward to heading home for spring break in just two short weeks. I can’t believe it’s almost here already, but I’m also really glad!

My 20th birthday was this past weekend– some friends and I went out to dinner to T.G.I. Friday’s downtown to celebrate. We had a great time!

Here’s me (on the left) with two friends enjoying our deserts!

Now that we’re several weeks into the semester at Loyola, it seems like professors are starting to pile on the classwork. I have quizzes and assignments due left and right in all of my classes. I’m doing my best to maintain my sanity!

I have friends from home coming in town this upcoming weekend– I’m very excited to welcome them when their train gets in tonight to Union Station downtown. We have plans to do some touristy things and then go our to dinner on Friday, hit up Skating in the Sky at the John Hancock Observatory on Saturday, and then go to a concert at the Riviera Theatre Saturday night. I will write again after the weekend and hopefully have lots of fun pictures to share!
