Interview Etiquette Seminar

Interview Etiquette Seminar

Hello, Ramblers!  This Wednesday I volunteered for the Fall 2014 Interview Etiquette Seminar hosted by National Society of Collegiate Scholars.   The seminar offered many resources, tips, and tricks that I found very applicable to all types of interviews.  Maybe these tips can benefit you too—check these out!

  1. Keep track of names, especially during group interviews where you meet multiple interviewers at once.  At each introduction, shake the interviewer’s hand and make an effort to assign the name with each face.  It’s possible that these interviewers are your future professors, mentors, and colleagues, so taking the time to learn their names early will mean a lot.
  2. Research before interviewing.  If you are applying to a college or a program, investigate beyond the school’s mission statement and academic profile.  Look at their extracurricular activities offered and keep in mind where you would see yourself if you attend.  For example, when I interviewed here at Loyola, I shared my plans to get involved in music ministry and Globe Med.
  3. Review your resume before you step into the interview.  This simple step reminds you of all of your accomplishments and organizes your past experiences into a compact list.  By staying consistent with your resume, you will establish continuity between your interview and your application.
  4. Turn your phone off.  If your phone rings or buzzes during the interview, you will lose legitimacy and professionalism in the interviewer’s eyes.
  5. Practice with the Career Development Center!  The Career Development Center is located in Office 255 of the Sullivan Center.  You can reach the office at 773-508-7716 or email at careercenter@luc.edu.  The Career Development Center offers mock interviews, walk-in hours, and job opportunities for students.
