Residence Halls

Residence Halls

Hello Ramblers, and happy groundhog’s day!  I hope you are staying warm as we head into six more weeks of winter.  At this point of the year we are also heading into the season of arranging living situations for next year, whether you choose to stay on campus, commute, or look off-campus.  Whatever you may have in mind for the 2015-2016 school year, here’s my take….

For freshman, your LLC (living-learning community) or program (Honors, environmental studies, etc) determine your residence hall.  In addition, freshmen and sophomores are required to live in residence halls.  During my freshman year I lived in Campion Hall along with two hundred other Interdisciplinary Honors students.  I remember the late night Dunkin Donuts adventures on nights before Honors exams, where my entire floor of girls trekked into the cold for coffee and munchkins.  I remember walking up the Campion stairs and smelling the cookies that my friend Mollie was baking in the kitchen downstairs.  Maybe my favorite were the movie nights and Superbowl parties in the piano lounge, where a big screen projector was set up for everyone to watch the game.  Although the dorms were relatively small to other residence halls, I loved the sense of community that I took away from my freshman year at Campion.

This year I live in Canisius Hall, where the kitchen area alone is as large as my Campion dorm room.  My room in Canisius this year is beautiful and complete with a dining area, sitting area, personal bathroom, and bedroom.  What I love most about Canisius Hall is that it is a block away from my classes in the Life Science Building.  In addition, only seventy people live in this dorm, so it is quiet enough to study in peace in the comfort of my own room.  Although upperclassmen residence halls do not compete with the sense of community that I felt in Campion, I love that I have so much space for decorations, dinner parties, and visits from friends.

Next year will be my first year off campus as a junior.  I look forward to decorating my new home but I will always miss the community feel of on-campus housing.  Moreover, I am excited for the freshmen and sophomores who are starting this process now! Housing applications opened today, so if you plan to live on campus next year, get your housing deposit submitted by February 11th!  I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you receive a great lottery number!
