Loyola Hoops

Loyola Hoops

For many, the start of the Fall signals the return of some of the nation’s most popular sports. Specifically college and professional football. I am not one of those many. In fact, I think I’m one of the few. Because, for me, the start of Fall means that basketball season is right around the corner.

I follow the professional and college game very closely. I think of most my friends and family members would say my following borders on “obsessive.” On the NBA side, I keep keen track of my beloved, Sacramento Kings. On the college end, I keep keep very, very close track of my alma mater, The Loyola Ramblers!

As I student I made it a point to attend as many basketball games as I could. This was easy since admittance to most games was free for students. For a couple hours each week, I would go to the games to temporarily escape the constant cycle of homework and classes.

Now, as a graduate and an employee of the university, I still make it a point to attend every game I can. This time around I’m attending the games as a season ticket holder (I felt real cool typing that).

Its an exciting time to root for the Ramblers. The university has recently renovated the training facilities for all it’s student athletes with the completion of the gorgeous, The Norville Center. In addition to building The Norville Center, Loyola also overhauled the interior of our basketball arena on campus, The Gentile Arena. The renovations created true stadium seating and reworked the nice, intimate setting already instilled in the bulding. The new Gentile Arena is a fantastic place to catch a game. Both facilities, which are connected, are truly impressive.

The Ramblers are poised to have a great season (full schedule here). The team will be taking on some great opponents. As usual, we’ll play Horizon League rivals, Valparaiso and UIC. We’ll also face, perennial basketball powerhouse, Michigan State in East Lansing. I think there’s one game that stands out from the rest, one with Mississippi State.

Why is this game so important?

Well, 2013 marks 50 year anniversary of when Loyola won the NCAA Basketball Championship. On the way to the championship game, Loyola had to face Mississippi State. A school that, at the time, was not allowed to play racially integrated teams. From Loyola’s Athletic Website:

“Its second-round opponent, Mississippi State, was a late addition because sports programs representing Mississippi schools were not allowed to play integrated teams. Coach Babe McCarthy stole his team to the tournament under the cover of darkness before an injunction could be served prohibiting the Maroons from playing the Ramblers. Loyola won the historic contest, 61-51, with a 20-point effort by All-America forward Jerry Harkness. That contest would prove to be a landmark event in the civil rights movement.”

Pretty cool right?

If you can’t tell, I’m looking forward to the season. I’m sure I’ll be writing more about hoops as the year progresses. Until then, I’m literally counting down the days until tip-off.

Free Shirts!!!

Free Shirts!!!

I was looking around my room today and noticed something, a majority of my clothing is from Loyola.

Since First coming to Loyola I have collected a total of 34 t-shirts (I paid for 3). I should also probably add that I have 3 mugs, two hats, 14 pens and 3 posters that I have received from various events as well.

I think it is time I made a quilt.

Loyola’s Annual Jesuit Jam

Loyola’s Annual Jesuit Jam

Loyola is the nation’s largest Jesuit university. Loyola’s Jesuits (the Jesuits are a specific order of Catholic priests) sponsor a men’s basketball game every year at Loyola’s now new-and-improved Gentile Arena. The “Jesuit Jam” of 2012 took place this past Friday when the Ramblers mens’ basketball team took on Cleveland State. The Jesuits gave away free swag and hosted a bunch of games and events during breaks in the game: a Jesuit dance contest and musical chairs game between the priests and a few student athletes. It was a really fun night!

Here is a peek at some of the photos I took that night for the Loyola Phoenix (All photos were taken by me!)

I Believe That We Will Win

I Believe That We Will Win

In 1963 Loyola University Chicago became the first and last school in Illinois to win a NCAA Basketball Championship. Although we were once a formidable foe in the nation, our status has declined slightly. We’re in an interesting position as we are rebuilding our team and revamping all athletics at Loyola. The problem I am faced with is I love this school and I love cheering for our teams whether we are winning or loosing.

Over the past couple weeks a group of students which I’m involved with have been working on what I believe is the most important part of the college sporting environment; a real student section. We have created new cheers, started advertising more and are simply trying to get our student body to understand we have couple of teams currently doing very well that they should support. Men’s Soccer won the Horizon League this last fall, James McLachlan just broke his 4th school record in track and field and our mens volleyball team is ranked 14th in the Nation after there wins over St. Francis and George Mason this past weekend.

There are things to cheer about, so come and join me in supporting our Loyola athletes.

Weekend Lovin’ and Rambler Pride

Weekend Lovin’ and Rambler Pride

Hey there readers! We’re coming to the close of a great weekend here on campus. I’m grateful that I don’t have too much homework to do this Sunday evening after a tough first week of classes, but I still wish I had another day left before the start of this coming week.

There was a pretty big snowfall on campus on Friday night— it was beautiful!

This was the view from my apartment in Baumhart Hall on Loyola’s Water Tower Campus on Friday during the snowstorm. You can see the School of Communications building across the street, and a few pedestrians all bundled up trying to hide from the wind!

Because of a few big sports games on campus, this past week was dubbed Spirit Week— my friends and I cheered on the Loyola Ramblers on Friday night as the men’s volleyball team played Penn State, and then again on Saturday afternoon as Loyola played Indiana’s Butler University in men’s basketball. Both were great games to watch!

Men’s basketball game— Loyola Ramblers vs. Butler Bulldogs; Saturday, January 21st. It was a full house!

After the basketball game, we headed over to the New 400 Theater just north of the Lakeshore Campus to see Mark Wahlberg’s new movie Contraband. It was so great! I am a huge Marky Mark fan; if you like him and you liked The Italian Job, I definitely recommend Contraband.

After the movie we made our way back to campus to the Centennial Forum Student Union to the “Stuff-a-Wolf” event that was part of Spirit Week. Instead of the traditional Build-a-Bear, Loyola’s Department of Programming ((dop)) sponsored “Stuff-a-Wolf”, and had adorable wolf stuffed animals for us to make in honor of Loyola’s mascot, Lu Wolf.

A photo of all of us girls and our new stuffed Ramblers!

Later, with our wolves in hand, we took the Red Line back downtown to our residence hall on the Water Tower Campus and had a relaxing evening with some chick flicks and hot tea. (Another movie I saw for the first time this weekend— Crazy, Stupid, Love. So great!) All in all, it was a pretty fun-filled weekend. Definitely setting the semester off right, and now I’m very much looking forward to what the rest of the semester’s weekends have in store!

Basketball!

Basketball!

Loyola Rambler’s vs. Depaul Blue Devils last night was awesome! Our men’s basketball team looked better than ever in the brand new Gentile Arena.

I must say, I have been to a handful of Loyola sporting events in the past: soccer, basketball and volleyball, but none of them compared to the basketball game last night. The arena was full of fans cheering on the Ramblers!

It was an awesome experience and I will definitely be going to more basketball games this season. Check out this picture from the student section!
