Journey of Compassion: Navigating the Intersection of Jesuit Values and Nursing at Loyola University Chicago

By Judy Carbajal

As a student nurse at Loyola University Chicago, I am not only immersed in the rigorous academic curriculum but also on a profound personal journey aligning with the principles of Jesuit education. Raised in the Catholic faith, the Jesuit values embedded in LUC’s educational philosophy resonate deeply with me, serving as a foundation for my evolving understanding of nursing and its potential impact on my community.

The fundamental principle of β€œbeing a person for others” guides my daily life, going beyond a simple phrase to embody a commitment to empathy, service, and understanding. Jesuit beliefs emphasizing holistic education, ethical decision-making, and service to others have become an integral part of my academic pursuit and future aspirations as a nurse.

In my upcoming role as a future nurse, I recognize the transformative power of Jesuit values in shaping my approach. These values emphasizing the care of the entire person β€” mind, body, and spirit β€” align seamlessly with the essence of nursing. Integrating compassion and a dedication to social justice into my nursing practice is not just about enhancing patient care; it is about contributing to the creation of a more just and compassionate healthcare system.

Jesuit education, rooted in the educational philosophy of the Society of Jesus, emphasizes critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and a commitment to social justice. This holistic approach aims to develop nurses who are not only academically competent but also compassionate and socially responsible. I am committed to embodying these principles as I engage with the world, ready to make a positive difference in the lives of those I serve.

As I explore the potential intersections between Jesuit values and biblical teachings, I find inspiration that enriches both my academic experience and my aspiration to be a compassionate healthcare professional. The wisdom encapsulated in the Catholic Bible reinforces the transformative power of education, echoing the belief that wisdom is paramount on this journey. In the words of Proverbs 8:11, β€œFor wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her,” I find a guiding light, emphasizing the profound impact that knowledge, compassion, and a commitment to others can have in the noble profession of nursing.
