Have you ever noticed the sunken Buddha head sculpture on Loyola and Sheridan by Lake Shore Campus? What about the small circle of similar sculptures that the shuttle passes on the way to Water Tower? You might be surprised to learn that these sculptures are more than just art; they are connected to an extremely important issue in our Chicagoland community.
Artist Indira Johnson is attempting to initiate a conversation about peace among community members by placing these thought-provoking Buddha heads around Chicago. Many people say that the sculptures do indeed make them feel a sense of peace. She challenges us all to end violence in our city through this project, known as the Ten Thousand Ripples campaign. She hopes that the campaign’s impact on individuals like you will create a ripple effect and spread to others.
We asked some Loyola students how the sculptures made them feel. Check out the video below to hear their responses.
If you’d like to track down the sculptures for yourself, check out this link for more locations.
