Females Take Center Stage in Loyola’s “Romeo and Juliet”

You all know the story of Romeo and Juliet. You may have read the play in school or watched endless remakes of the timeless classic. However, Loyola director Ann M. Shanahan has decided to tell the story in a new light, giving a fresh look to the romance between forbidden lovers torn apart by violent social conflicts. The play had mostly females take on male roles, including Romeo played by female actress Audrey Anderson, a junior at Loyola. Although the script was unchanged and addressed Romeo as a he/him/his, students who attended the performance thought the play invoked feelings of acceptance and equality.
