Latest Phish Scamming Students for Money

Posted on: August 24th, 2022 by Jim Pardonek

Seems that at the start of every semester, some scammer tries to use the lure of easy money to get a student to supply their banking information, supposedly for pay, only to find their bank account looted for sometimes several thousand dollars.  Students usually start the semester with a considerable amount of cash in their bank account to pay for their needs throughout the semester.  When they see what seems to be $400 – $500 a week for simple tasks, they go for it and lose in the end.  This semester’s email is slightly different, looking for assistants to visiting professors.  A copy of the email is below.

A couple of items to note in this email that should tip someone off are:

  • Poor grammar in the first sentence
  • The first sentence is incomplete
  • The “.ly” at the end of remotely
  • Liaise is capitalized in the middle of the sentence.

Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
