Holiday Phishing Scams

Posted on: December 2nd, 2013 by Mykael Baig

As the holiday season approaches, it is important to be aware of seasonal scams and cyber campaigns. These campaigns include:

  • Electronic greeting cards that may contain malware
  • Requests for charitable contribution that may be phishing scams
  • Screensavers or other forms of media that may contain malware
  • Credit card applications that may be phishing scams or identity theft attempts
  • Online shopping advertisements that may be phishing scams or identity theft attempts
  • Shipping notifications that may be phishing scams or may contain malware

The UISO encourages you to remember these simple tips to protect yourself from phishing scams and malware:

  • Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages
  • Use caution when opening email attachments
  • Keep antivirus software up-to-date
  • If contributing to a charity, check the Federal Trade Commission’s Charity Checklist before contributing

As always, if you are seeking advice on the legitimacy of a link, email, or otherwise, contact the UISO at datasecurity@luc.edu.
