National Lawyers Guild – Loyola Chapter

Loyola’s chapter of the National Lawyers Guild provides an opportunity for radical law students to participate in civil rights and social justice activities in partnership with many of Chicago’s best civil rights and criminal defense attorneys. The National Lawyers Guild is the country’s most progressive bar association and is composed of lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers. The Guild is dedicated to restructuring our political and economic system and seeks to unite its members to function as an effective force in the service of the people, with a fundamental tenet that human rights are more sacred than property interests. To that end, the Guild works on issues including civil rights, mass incarceration, and immigration rights (among other progressive issues).

Loyola’s chapter helps plan and present a city-wide (Dis)Orientation in the fall to offer incoming law students an alternative view of law school. Members are also active in the Chicago NLG “Next Gen” committee, which sponsors numerous social events for radical young lawyers and law students throughout the year. Loyola students work extensively with practicing attorneys to organize Chicago’s Legal Observer™ program, train new observers, and protect the rights of protesters. Perhaps most important of all, Loyola’s NLG strives to provide a support system for those who attend law school with the desire to challenge majoritarian legal and political structures. To this end, we have successfully lobbied to the school to offer more progressive courses, including Critical Race Theory, Feminist Jurisprudence, and the public interest legal writing section.

More information about the NLG can be found at the Chicago NLG website and the national website (www.nlg.org).
