Higher Ed Students-Front to Back: Katie Crossin, Erika Dismaya, Julia Duhan

On November 22nd, students from Loyola’s Higher Education program traveled to Garfield Park to prepare and serve a meal at Breakthrough Urban Ministry.  Breakthrough is a dynamic organization that works to empower its guests by providing individuals with the skills necessary to get back on their feet.  We were charged with purchasing, preparing, and serving a meal to 20 of the guests at Breakthrough’s men’s shelter.  As a Jesuit institution, serving others is a part of our everyday lives and this was a great opportunity to connect with our mission as an institution and as a program.  In higher education, we look to transform lives and assist students in their development throughout their collegiate career.  If we expect to create social change agents, we must lead by example.  Through service, reflection, and dialogue, I hope that these opportunities can continue to challenge institutional frameworks that perpetuate social injustices and that Loyola students lead the charge in making this world a more just place.
