{"id":377,"date":"2014-09-10T15:08:10","date_gmt":"2014-09-10T20:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/uiso\/?p=377"},"modified":"2014-09-10T15:08:10","modified_gmt":"2014-09-10T20:08:10","slug":"nearly-5-million-gmail-passwords-leaked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/uiso\/nearly-5-million-gmail-passwords-leaked\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 5 Million Gmail Passwords Leaked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/crime\/google-gmail-5-million-passwords-leaked\/\">Daily Dot<\/a> reported that nearly 5 million Gmail usernames and passwords have been hacked and posted on a Russian Bitcoin forum. \u00a0The unknown hacker posted a screenshot of the database on the forum Tuesday evening, revealing some of the stolen usernames and passwords.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn0.dailydot.com\/originals\/svyCoIx.jpg\" alt=\"Gmail passwords screenshot\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As of earlier today, the list has been taken down from the website.\u00a0 Google representatives reported that the attack was not a compromise of their systems, and that the credentials were stolen over a few years by <a title=\"phishing\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/phishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phishing <\/a>(posing\u00a0as a legitimate company to try to obtain users&#8217; information, usually via e-mail) and hacking individuals\u2019 accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Many users are finding that the leaked information is outdated, but the publisher claimed that over 60% of the stolen usernames and passwords are still working. \u00a0For this reason, Google and the University Information Security Office advises users to change their Gmail password, and enable <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/accounts\/answer\/185839?hl=en\">two-factor authentication<\/a> on their account. \u00a0As usual, you should create a <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-vista\/tips-for-creating-a-strong-password\">strong password<\/a>, which should contain over 8 characters (the longer the better), lower and uppercase characters, and numbers and\/or symbols.<\/p>\n<p>More information on this attack can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/crime\/google-gmail-5-million-passwords-leaked\/\">Daily Dot\u2019s website<\/a> and on <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5-million-gmail-passwords-leaked-check-yours-now-1632983265\/+matthardigree\">Life Hacker\u2019s website<\/a>.
