{"id":326,"date":"2014-06-26T08:38:48","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T13:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/uiso\/?p=326"},"modified":"2024-04-16T21:46:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T21:46:13","slug":"watch-out-for-new-paypal-phishing-attempt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/uiso\/watch-out-for-new-paypal-phishing-attempt\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Out for New PayPal Phishing Attempt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/consumermediallc.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/paypal_phishing.png?w=680&amp;h=821\" width=\"450\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">It is possible that the information used in these phishing emails may come from the eBay breach that occurred earlier this year. \u00a0This phishing attempt contained both a PayPal address and a company name that are on file for a specific account. \u201cPhishing mails always start with a generic \u2018Dear customer\u2019 or \u2018Dear Client,\u2019 but this one not only addresses me by my full name,\u201d a user, Phil, wrote to Consumerist. \u201cIt was also sent to an email address that I use EXCLUSIVELY for my Paypal account.\u201d Another likely explanation is that one of his customers fell for a similar phishing scheme and had the contents of their inbox harvested, including Phil\u2019s company name and that limited-access PayPal address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The phishing attempt tries to entice a user to click on the link which directs them to a malicious PayPal lookalike in order to obtain usernames and passwords.
