Photography

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Photography is simply breathtaking. When I borrow my uncle’s Cannon camera, I will take as many photos as I can. With the right lighting, pose, placement, focus, and colors, some pictures actually look professional. Whether it is a birthday, wedding, or vacation trip, I’ll always offer to be the photographer. It’s fun, it makes you productive, and you get to capture memories that cannot be redone again. With that being said, most family pictures do not include me in the picture because obviously, I am the one taking the picture (unless I do selfies!).

Besides being a amateur photographer, I enjoy looking at a lot of inspiring photos through boredpanda.com. I don’t want to sound like I am advertising or promoting this site, but this blog has tons of inspiring, funny, creative, and breathtaking photographs. Here, the quote (from above) speaks for itself; so much can be said about one picture- the descriptions are endless. If people are a part of the picture, you can instantly envision the lifestyle they live, what their emotions are, and more. For more of an abstract photograph, you can see the amount of creativity and open-mindedness the person put in.

All in all, photography is a wonderful hobby and I love to capture memories. To me, a picture is worth a million words.

Photo Class Adventures

Photo Class Adventures

This summer I am taking a photo class. While the class itself has really made me wish I could use a digital camera, I have been exploring many places I would have otherwise ignored. I’ve been able to venture all around the city for this course. Here are some of the great places I have encountered so far.

Osaka Gardens: On the south side of the city, on the opposite side of the Museum of Science and Industry, there is a park that I would have never known about if I was not randomly exploring. It is called Jackson park and it is really just a large space that I think most people aren’t taking advantage of. In the middle of the park this wonderful Japanese Garden. I am not quite sure what exactly makes it Japanese, but it provides for some great conversation spots with waterfalls and views looking over the lake at the museum.

Old St. Pats: While wondering towards Greek Town from Union Station I came across this church. Decorated with lots of Celtic symbols and crests the inside looks like Easter exploded. The majority of the interior is decorated in pastel colors and the people of the community are well stereotypical Midwesterners, aka unbelievably nice.

Chicago Riverwalk: I have been to this area many times but never taken the time to actually really look and observe the surrounding. On the south side of the walk you can find some great views along with random tours. On the North Side there is not much to see except this waterfall, kinda randomly placed but is very nice. Its a great place sit in front of and relax as the boats pass by and the Chicago skyline lurks over you.

New Year, Clean Slate, Chilly Conditions

New Year, Clean Slate, Chilly Conditions

Today is my third day of classes back on campus for the spring semester. It definitely doesn’t feel like spring at all! I am thankful for the sun today, but the wind pulls the temperature down to subzero temperatures.

Other that the less than pleasant weather, I am happy to be able to start the new semester with a clean slate. My new year’s resolutions mostly revolve around being more proactive in getting assignments done earlier (I am usually quite the procrastinator), so we’ll see how that goes!

I am most looking forward to diving into my Photography I class for my Studio Art/Photography minor, taught by Professor James Jensen. He seems to be very enthusiastic and really know what he’s talking about— I learned more in the first two classes about the history and technology behind photography than I did in two years of photo classes in high school! I am really looking forward to getting some assignments and actually being able to go out and shoot a few rolls.

This is the film camera I’ll be using for my Photo class assignments. I’m so excited!

The Homestretch

The Homestretch

It’s been surprisingly great to be back at school from Thanksgiving break. Only two weeks left of classes and then finals week. I am ready to power through, and am very much looking forward to getting back home for a whole month!

It’s hard to concentrate on my current classes when I feel like I’m already in the mindset of next semester. I’m loving my class schedule for next semester—I finally got into a couple of photography classes! I’m taking Photography I, an art class and the first step into my photography minor, and Photojournalism, which is a communications class and will count as an elective for my Communication Studies major. Along with those two, I’m enrolled in Journalistic Interviewing, Writing for the Web (which will help me for blogging!), and Intro to the Bible.
