{"id":858,"date":"2019-05-09T13:28:27","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T18:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/socialwork\/?p=858"},"modified":"2024-06-20T16:10:15","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T16:10:15","slug":"msw-student-receives-the-gran-varones-positive-digital-arts-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/socialwork\/?p=858","title":{"rendered":"MSW Student receives the Gran Varones Positive Digital Arts Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The School of Social Work is proud to announce that Aces Lira, a\ncurrent dual degree major in social work and women\u2019s studies and gender studies\n(MSW\/MA), is an award recipient of <a href=\"https:\/\/thegranvarones.com\/\">The\nGran&nbsp;Varones<\/a>&nbsp;Positive Digital Arts Fellowship.&nbsp;The highly competitive year-long fellowship is\ncomprised of a cohort of six&nbsp;Afro-Latinx and Latinx,&nbsp;HIV\npositive, gay, trans, queer, and bisexual men&nbsp;from\nacross the United States.&nbsp;The fellowship comes as a result of\nfive-years of fundraising efforts led by The Gran Varones project and also\nserves as an opportunity to challenge HIV stigma, promote family acceptance, and pair cohort members with mentors to create\ndigital content about these topics. Aces met the other fellows to commence\ntheir collaborative work in Washington D.C. a couple of weeks ago. In addition\nto this prestigious fellowship and completing his first year in the MSW\/MA dual\ndegree program at Loyola, Aces is also a member of the International Student\nTraining Network (ISTN) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inqyr.org\/\">International\nPartnership for Queer Youth Resilience<\/a> (INQYR). As part of his work on this\nglobal academic and community-based partnership, Aces is a research assistant\nworking with Dr. Michael Dentato, Associate Professor in the School of Social\nWork, and collaborating with colleagues from across the U.S. to develop a photo\nelicitation research study focusing on LGBTQ+ youth. When asked about the\nmeaning and importance of the Gran&nbsp;Varones&nbsp;fellowship, Aces remarked:\n\u201cThis\nopportunity means so much to me.
