However, Loyola alumni, Yariana Baralt-Torres and Maria Blanco grabbed their future by the reins by forming a dance collective titled LOUD BODIES in August, just three months after graduating in May. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both artists said they had considered creating their own dance company, but did not expect it to manifest so soon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always talked about starting our own company together,&#8221; Baralt-Torres said. &#8220;We always joked about it and then I feel like Senior year it got more serious, like yes we will have a company but we always talked about taking a few years to figure out ourselves and then starting it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two decided to form their mission around their strong connection to social justice. <\/span>The mission of LOUD BODIES is<b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLOUD BODIES looks to create a platform for activism through dance. LOUD BODIES create meaningful work inspired by social issues to provoke change. We believe that vulnerability and honesty evokes emotion and raises awareness, which can lead to action and change. LOUD BODIES uses dance and choreography to fight for social justice, to bring awareness to oppressed topics or communities, and to calls for unity, understanding, compassion and action. It is LOUD BODIES\u2019 mission to take the time to explore how bodies can tell complex narratives in the most authentic, sincere and bold way.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blanco and Baralt-Torres admit that they are undergoing a learning process in balancing LOUD BODIES and personal projects. Photography by Emma Petersen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOUD BODIES premiered their original work &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thursday Night&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collaboraction.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Collaboraction\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Peacebook Festival and performed \u201cTo Be a Woman\u201d at Collaboraction\u2019s Peacebook Parlor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baralt-Torres and Blanco have performed in Yin Hee Dance: Vice and Virtue at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/linkshall.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Links Hall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where Baralt-Torres premiered her piece<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m Fine.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0At Links Hall\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Breaking Grounds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Series, Blanco premiered her work &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To Really Get Down,&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0which she performed alongside Baralt-Torres and current Loyola dance major, Loretta Holmes.
