When I graduated from Elmhurst College, I interned at different nonprofits, did some advocacy work with the Federal Communications Commission and the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation for five years then came back to school.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn this department, I have had Dr. Mike Canaris and Dr. Peter Jones as professors.\u00a0 They were tremendous.\u00a0 Everyone here wants you to succeed.\u00a0 I feel like they know you will do the work.\u00a0 As a student who takes twice the time it takes you to do a paper, I can attest that the workload is reasonable.\u00a0 This is graduate school.\u00a0 Feel welcome to communicate with professors but you cannot afford to not put in the effort.\u00a0 As long as they know you\u2019re trying, they will help you.\u00a0 For example, in Mike\u2019s class, I was doing well on the assignments, but I wanted to throw the textbook out the window.\u00a0 I expressed that to him, and he said, \u201cI know you don\u2019t have a background in theology.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay.\u201d\u00a0 We worked through it.\u00a0 Every single professor wants you to succeed.\u00a0 They truly do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/files\/2018\/08\/Hannah-Thompson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3614 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/files\/2018\/08\/Hannah-Thompson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><em>Photo Source: Chicago Parent Magazine<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><em>\u201cOk, now I get to talk about the fun stuff!\u00a0 I am the Student Engagement Committee (SEC) chair.\u00a0 Last year, I was sitting where you are.\u00a0 I decided to go to the first meeting.\u00a0 It\u2019s really fun.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m in a leadership position.\u00a0 With my disability, I could have easily been the online student that no one really knew.\u00a0 That identify did not sit with me very well.\u00a0 Getting involved really and truly is rewarding.\u00a0 For one, I can walk into a classroom and have an idea of who that professor is and vice versa.\u00a0 Your experience is so much richer if you get involved.\u00a0 We also need members to make the Student Engagement Committee work.\u00a0 The majority graduated last spring so I hope you at least come to the first meeting scheduled for September 5th at 3 o\u2019clock.\u00a0 We won\u2019t have it the first week because that would be crazy but the second week on Sep 5<sup>th<\/sup> at 3pm, please come.\u00a0 Getting involved only leads to good things.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo sum up, everyone in the room is now your cheerleader.\u00a0 We need to be present.\u00a0 Get to know people.\u00a0 These professors have touched my life.\u00a0 This is a very devoted group of faculty that will challenge you while respecting your beliefs.\u00a0 As for me, I\u2019m the woman using a wheelchair, who uses a communication device to speak, usually in pink.\u00a0 I\u2019m real easy to recognize.\u00a0 I want to get to know you.\u00a0 I hope to see you around and chat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>May the entire IPS family have a blessed academic 2018-2019 year and continue its mission to facilitate the integrated ministerial development of diverse and dynamic leaders for creative, compassionate, and courageous service to
