Ted Stone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fr. Ted Stone, a key figure in the founding of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luc.edu\/ips\/\">IPS<\/a><\/strong> in 1964, passed away on January 4<sup>th <\/sup>at the age of 91.<\/p>\n<p>According to long-time IPS professor and <em>Aggiornamento Award<\/em> recipient Peter Gilmour, Fr. Ted was a Chicago diocesan priest who worked full-time in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) office of the archdiocese when he helped co-found IPS.<\/p>\n<p>Gilmour continues: <em>\u201c(Fr. Ted) worked closely with Michael Gannon to shape (IPS\u2019s) first curriculum and community character.\u00a0 He was one of the major teachers in the summer program in its early years.\u00a0 (Fr. Ted) was well known internationally, having attended many of the \u201cInternational Study Weeks on Catechetics\u201d held around the world back then.\u00a0 He left the priesthood, married, and after his wife&#8217;s death, returned to the priesthood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3339\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/files\/2018\/01\/Ted-Stone-son.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3339 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/files\/2018\/01\/Ted-Stone-son-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Ted-Stone-son-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/ips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Ted-Stone-son.jpg 535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fr. Ted with son Tim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/suburbs\/park-ridge\/news\/ct-prh-ted-stone-obit-tl-0111-20180109-story.html\"><strong>Chicago Tribune article<\/strong><\/a> chronicled more specifics of Fr. Ted\u2019s life journey:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Stone was an associate pastor at Mary, Seat of Wisdom for 20 years, until his retirement in 2002, but continued to serve the parish in the years that followed, the archdiocese said.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>According to the Archdiocese of Chicago, Stone requested to leave the priesthood in 1969 in order to marry. He and his wife had two children, but after her death in 1981, he looked to return to the priesthood, the archdiocese said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 1996, following the death of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, archbishop of Chicago, Stone shared with the Chicago Tribune of how he sought Bernardin&#8217;s help in resuming his vocation. According to Stone, it took seven years of interceding before the cardinal was able to get church officials in Rome to approve Stone&#8217;s reinstatement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He kept going back and back, trying to get the authorities to allow it,&#8221; Stone was quoted as saying.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Luca Badetti, Community Life Director at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larchechicago.org\/\">L\u2019Arche Chicago<\/a><\/strong>, recently honored Fr. Ted with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.larchechicago.org\/news\/2018\/1\/11\/remembering-ted-stone\"><strong>L\u2019Arche post<\/strong><\/a>, writing <em>\u201cTed lived fatherhood in various ways: both as a priest and as a father of two\u2026He left the active priesthood in 1969, after which he married. He fathered Tim, a beloved core member of our L&#8217;Arche community, and Bethanne, a precious friend of our community\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In recalling the last year of Fr. Ted\u2019s life, Badetti adds, <em>\u201cEven through the health effects of aging, Ted seemed to walk on earth as a &#8220;man on a mission&#8221; would. A soft-spoken and humble man, his posture, his walk, his glances and his attentiveness seemed to be directed to something &#8211; or better, Someone &#8211; much larger than himself.
