“The Career Diversity Five Skills were first identified in focus groups of historians with PhDs who found careers beyond traditional academia\u2014five things they hadn\u2019t learned in grad school but that they found they needed in order to succeed beyond the academy. These five skills are also essential to succeeding as professors. They are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. COMMUNICATION<\/a><\/strong>, in a variety of media and to a variety of audiences<\/li>\n
  2. COLLABORATION<\/a><\/strong>, especially with people who might not share your worldview<\/li>\n
  3. QUANTITATIVE LITERACY<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0a basic ability to understand and communicate information presented in quantitative form, i.e., understanding that numbers tell a story the same way words, images, and artifacts do<\/li>\n
  4. INTELLECTUAL SELF-CONFIDENCE<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0the ability to work beyond subject matter expertise, to be nimble and imaginative in projects and plans<\/li>\n
  5. DIGITAL LITERACY<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0a basic familiarity with digital tools and platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This guide presents an introduction to each skill\u2014adapted from posts originally published on\u00a0AHA Today<\/em>\u00a0in Spring 2016\u2014as well as a list of AHA-produced resources that can help develop an understanding of that skill. The resources include blog posts,\u00a0Perspectives on History<\/em>\u00a0articles, video resources, and more.<\/p>\n
