Young Phillies Fan Holds Onto Nationals Homerun Ball

With spring in the air, it’s hard not to think of baseball. Here’s Bobby O’Mullan’s take on the Nationals:

Sunday the Phillies hosted the Washington Nations, when with two outs, Bryce Harper hit a homerun into left center, which was caught by a young Phillies fan. Despite being pressured by at least one near by fan to throw the ball back, the child proudly kept his prized souvenir.

A baseball game is an exciting experience for any fan of the sport. It’s a time when you can forget all about your outside obligations and cheer on the team you love in person. You’re surrounded by a sea of people who won’t judge you if you spill your drink everywhere, throw your peanut shells on the ground, scream “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the top of your lungs in the 7th inning, or just quietly record the game stats to yourself. For every fan this is a fun environment, and for a child it’s absolutely electric. A baseball game is the antithesis of how mom asks you to behave at the dinner table. Here, there is no “inside voice”. Top that with the possibility of snagging a foul ball, or even a homerun ball from an up and coming all-star playing, it’s no wonder the young fan decided to keep the Harper HR ball.

The game was a competitive one and went into extra innings. The Nationals eventually pull it off winning the game 4-3. This game might have been the moral booster the team needs to get on a winning streak and bring their record above .500. This week they hit the road to Boston to take on the (4-2) Red Sox. Look for the Nats to put on a surprisingly competitive showing against the Sox.
