{"id":753,"date":"2011-06-13T07:38:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-13T12:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/?p=753"},"modified":"2011-06-13T07:38:45","modified_gmt":"2011-06-13T12:38:45","slug":"%e5%9c%b0%e4%ba%8c%e5%a4%a9-%e6%88%91%e7%9a%84%e8%ae%b2%e8%af%9d%e4%b8%8d%e5%bd%93%e5%a4%9a%e5%a5%bd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/?p=753","title":{"rendered":"\u5730\u4e8c\u5929&#8211;\u6211\u7684\u8bb2\u8bdd\u4e0d\u5f53\u591a\u597d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>so&#8230;the flight took a long time.\u00a0 we were supposed to land in beijing at about 3pm, but due to thunderstorms, we ended up getting diverted to a smaller city west of beijing, taiyuan.\u00a0 Most of us on the plane didn&#8217;t even realize we had been diverted until the captain decided to announce as we hit the ground, &#8220;Hello ladies and gentlemen, as you may have noticed, we are not in beijing&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-754\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2011\/06\/DSC02038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-754\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2011\/06\/DSC02038-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">we can go to thousands of airports...but not yours<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>cue the collective gasp of surprise.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-760\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2011\/06\/DSC02033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-760\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/DSC02033-360x270.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">expression of disgust at the delay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We were only supposed to be in taiyuan for perhaps an hour, but we ended up waiting about four\/five hours before we could refuel and get clearance to go to beijing, which took about another hour.\u00a0\u00a0 My thirteen hour flight turned into about a 20 hour flight, but in the end, i arrived, so i guess that&#8217;s really all that matters.\u00a0 The people on the plane were really nice for the most part, but i guess everyone kind of bands together when they&#8217;re stuck without any option of aborting a shared enclosed space.\u00a0 and when we have a common complaint.<\/p>\n<p>I got in to UIBE, where the beijing center is located, at around 11:30, and got into my room at about 12 midnight.\u00a0 I had an unfortunate experience of having to call my room to wake up my roommate so i could get in&#8230;.i felt so bad!\u00a0 but she was really nice, and we&#8217;re really getting along swimmingly.\u00a0 right now we&#8217;re sitting in a cafe across from the western gate of our school that has internet.\u00a0 i tried getting internet at school&#8230;but was thwarted, sadly.<\/p>\n<p>Our ChinaGreen group has 9 people in it, and even though i was worried at first about the small size, it has served to actually allow for more interaction as opposed to irritation.\u00a0 but i&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll all get on each others&#8217; nerves at some point in time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The first day of orientation was good&#8211;we had some info sessions from the program director and such, and then we had some host students kind of help us get around and get situated&#8230;buy simcards, random groceries&#8230;stuff like that.\u00a0 The names of the students were miracle and gina.\u00a0 i really don&#8217;t understand how chinese people choose english names, but it always serves to be entertaining.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure they think the same thing of those of us who choose chinese names.\u00a0 But, the best part of yesterday&#8230;?\u00a0 definitely the nap.\u00a0 i was going to check out the gym, but&#8230;i woke up later than i had planned, and then just threw out all plans of running and slept some more before our dinner appointment, which was at 6:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>There was a culture show, and i&#8217;d love to attach a movie\/video of the show, but the connection i&#8217;m on now does not really permit it.\u00a0 I promise to put one up when i&#8217;m at better location for it.\u00a0 As it is, getting pictures uploaded is proving to be a little difficult.<\/p>\n<p>We went out to a bar to get a drink to beat jetlag at night, and then came home and passed out from exhaustion.\u00a0 yay for zzzzzz&#8217;s!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">This morning, we had to take care of our own breakfast, and when i went into the school cafe to pick up a pastry, i saw this bao that looked like it was filled with pandan paste.\u00a0 Highly suspicious that pandan had not made it to china, i asked the cafe lady, and she said it was some kind of bean.\u00a0 wang dou?\u00a0 i dunno exactly&#8230;as i was inquiring, someone else in the cafe said, without looking, mind you, that it was red bean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">but it was green&#8230;.and then we both agreed we had no idea what it was.\u00a0 i ate it anyways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">We then had a guest lecturer give us a brief overview of modern chinese history, which was fascinating and&#8230;disturbing.\u00a0 Disturbing only in the sense that some of the events elicited either an angry emotional response or an extremely sad emotional response.\u00a0 But i suppose that just means that i still have a heart&#8230;even though i&#8217;ve sworn several times that it doesn&#8217;t exist.\u00a0 After the hour and a half lecture, we took a bus to the center of beijing to visit tian&#8217;anmen square and the forbidden city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">for 4.5 hours.\u00a0 it was hot.\u00a0 and smoggy.\u00a0 but so cool.\u00a0 Beijing is an interesting mix of new and modern buildings and ancient structures left from the qing dynasty.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also teeming with differnt types of tourists from all different nations.
