I have never been the one who likes to wait, especially in heat and overcrowding, but here I think I can make an exception. \u00a0Which is laughable, because even without my mental exception I have no choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3426\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3426\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/Line-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a clustered line of vans waiting for the ferry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The above is a journal\u00a0excerpt\u00a0from my trip to Cambodia. \u00a0After 3 hours of driving through the Cambodian countryside on a journey to\u00a0Phnom\u00a0Penh, our bus was halted by a massive line of tuk tuks and mini vans filled with people. \u00a0They were all waiting for a pair of rotating ferry boats to cross the Mekong River. \u00a0At that moment, I could only think of the number of frustrating layovers I have experienced with airlines, angry because I felt I didn&#8217;t get what I paid for. \u00a0This situation was different, I wasn&#8217;t sitting in any mundane airport forced to watch subtitles on CNN while I listened to John Mayer over the loud speaker (no\u00a0offense\u00a0to John Mayer or CNN). \u00a0I was in Cambodia: wandering the streets during an unplanned stop, waving at smiling locals, watching\u00a0water-buffalo\u00a0graze in the distance, or reading Joel Brinkley&#8217;s exceptional book, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cambodia&#8217;s Curse: The Modern History of a Troubled Land<\/span>. \u00a0Life was good.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3427\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3427\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/clowncar-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;clown cars&quot; full of Cambodians traveling over holiday and waiting for the ferry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before coming to Southeast Asia, I pictured Cambodia as a paradise. \u00a0I was ignorant, and to be honest, any foreign country sounded like a paradise to me. \u00a0In reality, Cambodia does have a wonderful landscape, but it also has had a long history of war and economic struggles. \u00a0What is most surprising about my lack of knowledge on Cambodia, is that the conflict and genocide tied to the Khmer Rouge take over happened while my parents and grandparents were alive. \u00a0I suppose these events could have been overshadowed by the Vietnam War and issues that directly impacted the United States, or even the fact I had never taken a Southeast Asian class until this semester. \u00a0The trip to Phnom Penh was exciting and emotional.<\/p>\n<p>1) Our group visited Toeul Slang Highshool and the Killing Fields (also a movie), both sites of mass killings during the late 1970&#8217;s by the Khmer Rouge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3428\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3428\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/victim2-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">victims of the Toeul Slang High School killings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3429\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3429\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/cell-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">classrooms turned prison cells at Toeul Slang High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3430\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3430\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/kfield1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">bracelets left in memory of mother and child victims at the Killing Fields<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>2) We were given a lecture by a Cambodian economist who essentially spoke of more struggles than successes on the current political and economic state in Cambodia.<\/p>\n<p>3) Visited the Peace Cafe, run by Center of the Dove ( a Jesuit Org.) that teaches life skills to those who are shut in and disabled in Cambodia (http:\/\/www.jesuit.org\/2010\/10\/28\/the-power-of-hope-a-jesuit-training-center-in-cambodia\/) Besides selling coffee and hand made goods, the Center is also the leading producer of wheelchairs in the country. \u00a0These chairs are stable enough to last on gravel roads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3431\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3431\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3431\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/PEACE-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peace Cafe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3432\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3432\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3432\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/furniture-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">homemade furniture at the Peace Cafe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3433\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/wheelchait-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Our trip to Cambodia occurred during the mourning period and funeral for the late King, Norodom Sihanouk, who recently died in Bangkok. \u00a0On our first night in the city, we witnessed many Cambodian&#8217;s praying and lighting incense in front of the palace in his honor. \u00a0Black ribbons were worn across the country in remembrance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3434\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3434\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3434\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/kids-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">palace in Phnom Penh lit to commemorate the late king<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3435\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3435\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/honorking-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">lighting incense to honor the king<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Day Three- October 19, 2012<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Again, I am in a surprisingly good mood despite the current situation. \u00a0After all, I just saw a space ship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3436\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3436\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/spaceship-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a &quot;space ship&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The above is also a journal excerpt from the Cambodia trip. \u00a0Surprisingly, our second bus, to Siem Reap, was delayed. \u00a0This time the bus broke down. \u00a0For two hours our group explored a village 1 and 1\/2 hours outside of the city. \u00a0The space ship was located in a park, and I was more than willing to imagine the children on their way to the moon. It was sunset, and we took in the view while watching a man fish off of the bridge. \u00a0At 9 pm we made it to our hotel, ate, and rested for the long day ahead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3437\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3437\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.luc.edu\/goglobal\/files\/2012\/10\/cambodianhomes2-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cambodia has many tropical wetlands.  Most homes are built elevated from the ground.  All stairs also must be built in odd number due to religious superstition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;I almost wonder how this place looked 9 centuries ago,&#8221; Jack said to me on our excursion to Angkor Wat and surrounding temples. \u00a0It was a time warp. \u00a0Everything was handmade and carved from stone. \u00a0The magnitude and beauty of the Hindu and Buddhist temples were unreal. \u00a0It was a perfect fusion of nature and man. \u00a0I will include photos in their own post (you won&#8217;t believe the trees I saw!)<\/p>\n<p>The trip to Cambodia is something that makes the Vietnam program exceptional, and for some, could possibly be a reason to join the program at all.
