The academic year for 2017-2018 has begun at the Center for Compliance Studies<\/a>. We have a lot on tap\u2014a new look for the blog, an exciting symposium in February 2018, Issue 2 of the Journal<\/em> soon to be published, and a number of new scholarly endeavors.<\/p>\n

First off, you may have noticed the Inside Compliance<\/em> blog had a makeover during the summer.\u00a0 It is now easier to access archives and search by topic to pull up posts on specific subject-matter areas.\u00a0 We owe a big thanks to Loyola 3L Sarah Gregory for the blog transformation.\u00a0 Additionally, this year we have over 35 JD students who will be monitoring news and posting compliance law updates and commentary.\u00a0 That is almost 10% of the 2L and 3L JD students at Loyola, which shows how many up-and-coming legal professionals are interested in compliance.\u00a0 This year the blog will also continue to feature interviews with compliance officers and regulatory attorneys as well as posts from alums.\u00a0 We are also excited to have our MJ and LLM students join us on the blog.<\/p>\n

Secondly, we are putting the finishing touches on the second issue of Loyola\u2019s Journal of Regulatory Compliance<\/a><\/em>. The issue is planned for publication in early-to-mid October and includes articles by Jennifer Mascott<\/a> of Georgetown University and Michael Silverman<\/a> of Columbia University.<\/p>\n

Following the success of the Center for Compliance Studies\u2019 inaugural symposium last year<\/a>, the Center will be hosting its second annual symposium on February 16, 2018. \u00a0At the heart of the 2018 symposium will be the question, \u201cWhat is the role of a regulation if it is not enforced?\u201d\u00a0 We are currently recruiting a dynamite line-up of speakers, and will also be issuing a call for papers soon.<\/p>\n

Readers of the blog should keep an eye out for the annual symposium hosted by Loyola\u2019s Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy on November 10, 2017.\u00a0 The topic is \u201cPrivacy, Big Data and the Demands of Providing Quality Patient Care<\/a>,\u201d and promises to explore important regulatory aspects of health care privacy and security.<\/p>\n

The Center will also be hosting ad hoc online webinars throughout the year on regulatory and administrative law developments, including ongoing observations on compliance enforcement by federal and State authorities.\u00a0 These webinars will be announced on the Inside Compliance<\/em> blog, so watch this space.<\/p>\n

Finally, in addition to offerings from the Center itself, we continue to enjoy a relationship with the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association.\u00a0 The Center will be participating in SCCE\u2019s Compliance & Ethics Institute<\/a> in October and HCCA\u2019s Compliance Institute<\/a> in April along with a variety of regional conferences.\u00a0 We will also be highlighting our many Loyola alums who are working in the compliance profession throughout the United States from Alaska to Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

The past year has been an incredible growth period for the Center for Compliance Studies. Not only have we launched the Journal<\/em> and blog, but the compliance curriculum at Loyola now has over 40 regulatory courses on-campus and online that are accredited by the Compliance Certification Board.\u00a0 The enthusiasm for this emerging profession is coming from straight from the students. In that vein, I want to thank and welcome our new Executive Board: Kevin Pasciak as Managing Editor, Sarah Gregory as Content Editor, and Corinne Nierzwicki as Production Editor.\u00a0 We are lucky to have their leadership; it is their work that makes this endeavor and Loyola\u2019s efforts successful.<\/p>\n
