While deregulation may succeed in creating short-term investment, it often leads to long-term costs. On the front end, data centers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/technology\/article\/who-benefits-from-data-centers-and-what-are-the-benefits\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">create<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> construction jobs, bring an influx of tax revenue, and bolster infrastructure investment. For example, data center revenue in Loudoun County, Virginia, helped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/09\/21\/nx-s1-5927288\/data-center-election-voters-ai\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reduce<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the county\u2019s property and vehicle tax rates. But while the construction created thousands of temporary jobs, the finished facilities only supported a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/new-evidence-on-data-center-employment-effects\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">few dozen<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> permanent jobs. In said election, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2026\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">all<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the seats in the House of Representatives, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_Senate_elections,_2026\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">33<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> seats in the Senate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/State_executive_official_elections,_2026\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">36<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> governorships, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/2026-legislative-races-by-state-and-chamber\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">83%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of state legislative seats will be decided. To achieve their goal, regulators relaxed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/07\/accelerating-federal-permitting-of-data-center-infrastructure\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">permitting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> process and eased government approvals. They offered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/fiscal\/subsidizing-servers-how-states-are-competing-to-attract-data-centers\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">buffet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of tax incentives, such as sales tax breaks on essential equipment and construction materials, property tax reductions, and tax exemptions on electricity usage. New York\u2019s Governor Kathy Hochul, who is also facing reelection, put a one-year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ai-data-centers-governors-pennsylvania-texas-shapiro-abbott-f96176c2bcb76cbe8e823ed79fbdf196\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">moratorium<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on all data center construction.
