The College Board (the Board) <a href=\"https:\/\/apstudents.collegeboard.org\/course-index-page\">offers 39 AP classes<\/a> on many different subjects, and has recently added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\">an African American history course<\/a>. The Board piloted this course at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\">60 high schools<\/a> throughout the country, but hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/us\/college-board-advanced-placement-african-american-studies.html\">roadblock in Florida<\/a>. The Florida Department of Education (FDOE)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/us\/college-board-advanced-placement-african-american-studies.html\"> banned <\/a>it from being offered in the state due to them believing it is not historically accurate and would violate state law. However, many scholars and educators worry that this is Republican lawmakers trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/1020596\/college-board-capitulates-to-conservative-cancel-culture-over-ap-african-american\">block schools from teaching<\/a> topics that don\u2019t align with their political ideas. This ban should be rethought. African American history is an important topic for students to learn, and they should also have the option to receive college credit as any other AP classes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>FDOE banned the AP African American course<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The AP African American History course is intended to teach students about the social injustices experience by Black Americans throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themiamihurricane.com\/2023\/01\/25\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-bans-ap-african-american-studies-course-from-high-schools\/\">US history<\/a> and have them understand the cultural influences on different past issues and movements in Black American culture. The College Board did a pilot program and implemented the course at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/us\/college-board-advanced-placement-african-american-studies.html\">60 schools<\/a>. The course explores key historic events and social movements that shaped<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\"> the Black experience<\/a>, the diversity of African societies before slavery, and their contributions to literature and art.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The FDOE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\">banned the course<\/a> from being offered in the state, stating that it would violate state law, the Stop WOKE Act and is not historically accurate. In April 2022, Florida Governor signed the Stop WOKE Act that<a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/florida\/1020293\/floridas-stop-woke-act-and-similar-laws-in-other-red-states\"> restricted race discussions <\/a>in Florida public schools and universities. This ban includes the teaching that a person is \u201cinherently racist, sexist\u201d or that other people are privileged or oppressed <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/florida\/1020293\/floridas-stop-woke-act-and-similar-laws-in-other-red-states\">because of their race<\/a>. However, FDOE have approved other types of AP history courses in the past, such as European and World History, which are courses \u201ccentered around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themiamihurricane.com\/2023\/01\/25\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-bans-ap-african-american-studies-course-from-high-schools\/\">the white population<\/a>.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since then, the Board has gone back and <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/1020596\/college-board-capitulates-to-conservative-cancel-culture-over-ap-african-american\">revised the initial framework<\/a>. Much of the material covering contemporary topics like the Black Lives Matter movement and Black\/queer movements was <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/1020596\/college-board-capitulates-to-conservative-cancel-culture-over-ap-african-american\">in question<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themiamihurricane.com\/2023\/01\/25\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-bans-ap-african-american-studies-course-from-high-schools\/\">part of FDOE\u2019s concerns<\/a>. This material in the new framework was <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/1020596\/college-board-capitulates-to-conservative-cancel-culture-over-ap-african-american\">diminished into optional <\/a>research project topics. A group of African American studies educators spoke out <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/1020596\/college-board-capitulates-to-conservative-cancel-culture-over-ap-african-american\">defending the AP\u2019s original <\/a>coursework in an <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@afamprofshighered\/open-letter-in-defense-of-ap-african-american-studies-e61768fb8f9c\">open letter<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Board should not have done this to please the FDOE or Republican lawmakers. This showed that the Board is letting FDOE determine the proper way to examine the Black experience. There is <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@afamprofshighered\/open-letter-in-defense-of-ap-african-american-studies-e61768fb8f9c\">no information<\/a> to suggest FDOE is, or has ever claimed to be, an expert on any other subject matters being considered for AP course adoption. Allowing this to happen will only encourage more of the policing of the Black experience to occur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even with the changes in the framework, it doesn\u2019t seem like Florida will allow this class in the educational system. Now, the governor of Florida announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\">block state colleges<\/a> from having programs on diversity, equity and inclusion, and critical race theory. This censorship of the Black experience is going to further harm students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The ban needs to be removed<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Every child deserves to receive a well-rounded and inclusive education where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/voices\/2023\/02\/01\/desantis-ap-african-american-studies-ban-hurts-florida-students\/11133618002\/\">every student sees themselves<\/a> and others, and can develop a deep understanding of the complexity of our full American story. This ban denies the students this opportunity and prevents them from learning about African American history and culture with the potential to receive college credit. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some states have joined in and passed laws to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/free-speech\/state-lawmakers-are-trying-to-ban-talk-about-race-in-schools\"> ban <\/a>critical race theory instruction in all public schools. The Idaho legislature found that <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/statutesrules\/idstat\/title33\/t33ch1\/sect33-138\/\">critical race theory<\/a> \u201cexacerbates and inflames divisions on the basis of sex, race, . . . or other criteria in ways contrary to the unity of the nation and the well-being of the state of Idaho and its citizens.\u201d All these bans are doing is hurting the students from learning and receiving the credit they deserve. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other states have recognized that students have this right and have implemented different diversity courses. In 2021, California became the first state to make<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\"> ethnic studies <\/a>a requirement for high school students. The California Department of Education developed a framework to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-02-01\/for-the-first-time-students-can-take-african-american-studies-as-an-ap-class\"> help students<\/a> understand the past and present struggles of marginalized groups in America.<\/p>\n<p>When students are taught the history of different groups, they are able to get exposed to more diverse coursework and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/humanities\/advantages-of-ethnic-studies-courses\/\">see themselves<\/a> reflected in their textbooks. Silence on diverse topics like this one allow for the stereotypes, biases, and racism to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7826149\/\">reinforced<\/a>, which then could lead to more bullying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, teaching these topics can help students navigate and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/critical-race-theory-classroom-understanding-debate\/story?id=77627465\">understand racial oppression<\/a>. Then, they could potentially learn from the past and stop racial oppressions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame that the FDOE are depriving Florida citizens of receiving a rounded and inclusive education. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taelor Thornton Associate Editor Loyola University Chicago School of Law, JD 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) Music History, AP World History, AP Art History, AP European History, and now AP African American History.
