Need a Summer Playlist? WLUW Has The Best Tunes For You!

As you all must know by the multitude of blogs I’ve written about it, Loyola has one of the hottest radio stations in the Chicagoland area: 88.7 WLUW. Even if you don’t live in the area, though, you don’t need an FM station to stay tuned to the hottest underground artists we know and love!

WLUW’s website (wluw.org) offers an mp3 live stream where you can listen on your laptop or other electronic devices. On top of that, WLUW also offers a phone app! Just search WLUW in the App Store or Google Play Store and you can keep your music going wherever you go!

WLUW is a wonderful opportunity for music discovery, from playing well-known bands such as Arcade Fire and Tame Impala to much lesser known artists such as Warik, Thundercat, and Jay Som! Keeping the music going 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you can even check the schedule to tune in to some of specialty shows, such as Inside the Vault, which discusses WLUW’s history as a budding college radio station in the 1970s.

Want a little bit more of a visual performance? WLUW also has a YouTube channel where they post videos from live band performances at our School of Communications! I’ve personally been able to sit in for a few of those performances that should be released over this summer, and they are DEFINITELY something you don’t want to miss seeing. The bands the station pulls in are usually from Chicago, however for the Taste of Iceland Festival a couple weeks ago, two bands from Reykjavik, Iceland were nice enough to come and offer us performances!

Either way, if you need tunes to listen to to help crank through the rest of finals week, this summer, or this coming school year, WLUW is always rocking out on the airwaves, no matter how near or far away you are from your favorite city.

Come on! Feel the Illinoise!

Come on! Feel the Illinoise!

As a Rambler, we have the city of Chicago at our fingertips. Our U-Passes can take us anywhere our hearts desire. But with a city so large, how do you have fun without breaking your budget? As a DJ for 88.7 WLUW, Loyola’s radio station located at the Water Tower Campus, the job has opened up my eyes to a plethora of new music, from both Chicago natives, and bands that constantly stop in Chicago as they tour around America.

Before working at WLUW, I only knew of a couple local bands that played shows in the city, because of my own searches and talking to people at Loyola. But since then, working at WLUW, I’ve had my eyes opened up to so many new bands, who play shows that never cost more than $25. Seeing local bands like Twin Peaks (Who’re Rogers Park natives) to up-and-coming artists like Hoops, who make their homes at great venues all around the city.

But even if you don’t know some great underground artists, checking out WLUW while doing your homework or hanging out with your friends is a great way for you to listen to a whole different world of music without feeling the pressure of actively searching for that new music. Don’t have an FM radio like a lot of people? You can still tune in at wluw.org and listen through the mp3 stream. From there, so many doors open up as you see cheap shows all across Chicago, seeing a different side of Chicago, one that you might find a community in.

Don’t wanna stray too far away from campus? Once a month the ((dop)) puts on an Open Mic Night for Ramblers to share their talent, giving you the chance of meeting some skilled students with their own musical project.

If music is a passion of your’s like it is mine, getting involved in Chicago’s active music scene is entirely at your fingertips, and there are resources here at Loyola to help!

What’s Up World?!

What’s Up World?!

Hello! My name is Alex Benson and I’m an undergraduate admission counselor here at Loyola. I’ll be blogging through out the year, so I thought I’d take some time to tell a little about myself.

I’m originally come from the great state of California. Specifically, Sacramento. I came to Loyola a couple years ago to attend the university. I came in my Sophomore year, as a transfer student, after spending a year at a community college back home.

While attending Loyola I studied Journalism with a minor in Visual Communication (our major for graphic design). So, I split my time between our two campuses while I was a student. I had a fantastic time as a student. I loved how well many of my classes integrated all the great resources available in Chicago. I think Chicago is a wonderful place to live and learn.

When I wasn’t chipping away at school work, I stayed active outside the classroom working for both the student newspaper (The Phoenix) and radio station (WLUW 88.7). I also stayed active physically, by playing intramural soccer in the fall and spring.

My job as an admission counselor is basically talking to incoming students about Loyola. A big part of my job is reviewing applications from prospective freshman. All the admission counselor have different areas of the country we’re responsible for when it comes to applicants. I have the greater Cincinnati, Columbus area and some of the more western suburbs of Chicago.

My blog posts will cover a variety of topics through out the year. I’ll share some different admission tips and tricks. I’ll also talk about the different events around campus. And from time to time, I’ll post updates from my travels.

Hope you enjoy what I have to say!
