Taking Advantage Of The Weather

Taking Advantage Of The Weather

Taking Class Outside with Dr. Karanja

If there is one thing you can count on, it is that the weather in Chicago can change at the drop of a hat.  It can go from scorching heat to frigid cold in less than a week.  Consequently, the people of the windy city need to take advantage of the nice weather while it lasts.

The students of Loyola are no exception to this rule.  Lucky for us, some of the professors are just as eager to soak in the last bit of sunshine.  Ayana Karanja, my professor for SOCL 252: Global Inequalities, took our class outside last week for lecture.

Despite a few confused stares from onlookers, and the ever-present sound of Loyola construction, I would say that taking the class outside was a huge success.  A change of scenery breathed a new energy into our class discussion on social issues, and being seated in a circle on the grass made it easy for everyone to contribute.

I consider myself lucky to be enrolled in classes such as Global Inequalities, where it is easy for professors like Dr. Karanja to mix things up every once in a while.  I think the most effective professors are those that make the learning environment as comfortable as possible.  That combined with Loyola’s relatively small class sizes has made my learning experience in college especially valuable.

So as I look forward in the semester, knowing that another Chicago winter will surely come with a vengeance, I am glad to know that a few more weeks of warm breezes and sunshine still remain.

We’re Back In Session

We’re Back In Session

School has officially begun, and the buildings are crawling with students- we are taking over Loyola again!

I just got out of my new Literature class (30 minutes early), and I’m pretty sure almost the entire class is freshmen. Oh well, I need my other literary knowledge credit. I’m waiting for my new Theater class to begin now, my sixth class of the new semester. After this class is the class that I’m looking forward to most, Sociology 301.

I’m taking 7 classes this semester, 19 credits, and the workload is already piling up. In the next two weeks, I have to read an entire book for my Literature class,  4 chapters for Macroeconomics, 1 chapter with homework problems for Accounting, 1 chapter for Management and whatever else I have to do for my upcoming theater and sociology classes. Yes, this is me venting.

But despite the workload, I’m happy to be back. Though I love my downtime, I’m looking forward to essays, procrastinating and all-night cram sessions. I’m also looking forward to traveling the campuses again using the shuttle because I love those 20 minutes on the bus where I look out the window at the lakefront. Since the sun rises from that direction, it sparkles right over the water at the time I take the shuttle, and the views are breathtaking. It’s definitely been something I’ve been looking forward to seeing again all summer.

I’m looking forward to having more to blog about as well, and to checking my email and having real messages from teachers and classmates, not just spam mail from Ulta and Scholarships.com. To me, these reasons to be back are enough to enjoy it.

It’s time to head into my theater class now. Two more classes left to go, and then I get to go to work for a few hours. It’s going to be weird going from working over 20 hours a week to working just 5. I already miss seeing my coworkers all the time…

My Mini AutoBio

My Mini AutoBio

Hola readers!! My name is Yuliya Chernyavskaya, but let’s just leave things at my first name. I’m a junior at Loyola University Chicago, if you didn’t already assume that much, and I’m a double major in Marketing and Sociology.

I was raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago, namely the village of Northbrook, since I was seven. I’ve lost track of exactly where I was before that, though I know I lived in Rogers Park at some point. Although I may have lived in Chicago most of my life, I wasn’t born here. Actually, I wasn’t born in Illinois, of the USA for that matter. I was born in Chisinau, Moldova, which can be found on most maps (I hope).

I spent my first semester at Loyola on campus in Simpson Hall, but I became an off campus student after that. In the free time that I create for myself, I love to write, take walks and ask people questions about their lives. I have an intense curiousity about anything and everything, so I’m constantly researching online, asking people their stories and scoping out new things to learn.

When I’m not trying to busy myself with self-created projects, I can be found studying in random places, working at my awesome on-campus job, or relaxing with friends and family. I love to dance, sleep, explore, laugh, and many other verbs, but most importantly, I love to do all of this in the one, the only- CHICAGO!!
