Fall’s Fun Functions Part 1

Fall’s Fun Functions Part 1

I have survived nearly a month of school, and I feel quite good about myself. I had my first test of the semester, my Accounting test, this morning, which gave me one of my first official feelings of school being back in session. I have settled back into a nice routine for the semester, so now it’s time to get back to writing and crank out some blogs.

Last week, I didn’t write any blogs (no excuses, shame on me), so I’ll write multiple for this week to try and make up for it. Last week’s main piece of news is that my work has hired new employees. I work in the Undergraduate Admissions Office, and this is the time of the year when we welcome new student workers, so welcome guys!

We had a group meeting last week in which we went over our new computer program where we will be entering data, and afterwards we all had pizza, courtesy to our awesome boss for getting it for us. Our meeting felt like the introduction to a new work year, even though I’ve been working since the school year started. We’ve got lots of work to do, and I’m excited to get started. Go data entry!

Some other news is that one of my best friends just turned twenty-one on Saturday, and to celebrate, she and I went to Dave and Busters Friday night. She hadn’t been there since high school, and I hadn’t been there since I was about three years old, so it was definitely a good time finally going back.

We had dinner at their restaurant before hitting up the games with the Power Cards that we purchased. We wanted to get some prizes, so we mostly played the games that offered tickets. When we were done, we bought some fun little gifts with our tickets, including pens with silly heads on them.

On Saturday, I was invited to go to Wheels Family Day with my boyfriend’s family, which was the perfect day for the event. It took place in Des Plaines, and was a six hour event filled with karaoke, games, psychic readings and lots of food.

The first thing I did was I got my fortune read by a tarot card reader. She said some interesting things, including that I will one day be involved with politics somehow. This was funny to me because I’ve never been interested in politics, so I decided to get a reading from the other fortune teller later in the day. All I can say about psychics is that we are the only people who make our future because the answers I got for some things not only varied, but I personally knew that they weren’t true. Hooray for fortune tellers.

There were several other cool things that I got to do there, but those I will save for tomorrow’s blog, so stay tuned for my continued weekend adventures. Until then, go try and read your own palms and tarot cards because you and the internet will probably be as accurate as the real deal.

Night at the Museum

Night at the Museum

As I’ve mention before, my friend Natalie is a member of the Field Museum. And in being a member she has the total hook-up! Tonight we were able to explore and participate in special activities just for Members’ Night!  This is sort of the behind the scenes look at some of the items in storage, offices, library, laboratories and parts of the museum you don’t get to see every day.  It is a super popular event as a lot of people were there.

There was even live Mongolian dance and music performers to celebrate the new Genghis Khan exhibit.

Highlights of the night include holding a very poisonous live tarantula… Just kidding! Not poisonous at all and in fact very friendly!

Seeing unique artifacts in storage that have not been seen by human eyes in decades! Well, that’s not true, but they are not part of the main current exhibits.

And taking home a real dinosaur bone souvenir! Or the cast replica, but it still looks pretty convincing!

Accio Easter Break!

Accio Easter Break!

One of the perks of going to a Jesuit University is that we get a small break for Easter. As someone who doesn’t celebrate this Christian holiday, Easter break is simply a few extra days for me to relax before the onslaught of finals.

Last year I spent the whole break confined to my bed, alternating between sleeping, eating and watching Doctor Who on Netflix. But this year, I did something a little more exciting…one of my best friends, Rachel, convinced me to head down south and visit her in Miami!

I don't even go here.

It was one of the best trips I’ve taken in a while. We saw “The Hunger Games,” enjoyed an all you can eat sushi buffet (a challenge which we glad accepted) and I watched Rachel play quidditch. She also showed me a stereotypical Miami “study break” by taking me to the beach.

Rockin' our bikinis!

However, the highlight of my vacation was definitely the small road trip we made from Miami to Orlando in order to visit the Islands of Adventure

With my hero!

… and none other than The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

Yes, that is Hogwarts!

I’m not sure what my favorite part was – road tripping for the first time, getting my wand picked out by Ollivander himself (ash with unicorn hair!), tasting butterbeer for the first time, flying with Ron and Harry over Hogwarts or eating at the Three Broomsticks. I don’t think I can explain how amazing it was, except to say that the whole time I was borderline crying from happiness.

Typical picture of me and my borderline crying.

It had been so nice to just get away from everything, but visiting the world of one my favorite childhood books was the icing on the cake to an amazing trip.

Now that we only have about a month left of school, I’m more than glad that I have some warm memories to get me through to May 5th!

Midweek Movie Night!

Midweek Movie Night!

Last night my friends and I went to see the latest, Harry Potter, I mean, Daniel Radcliffe movie, The Woman in Black.  Wednesday night might seem a little inconvenient considering it’s the middle of the week between homework, classes and work.

Some of the best nights, however, aren’t Fridays or Saturdays.  I love spur of the moment plans with friends, and to be honest, they provide a little break from the often chaotic week.

We walked down Michigan Ave. on the way to River East 21, which gave us time to catch up and to make-up for a skipped workout.

The movie was sufficiently frightening, but I’ll save you from a complete movie review.  It was a great night and I look forward to more weeknight fun!

“Monkeying” Around

“Monkeying” Around

So this is a bit silly, but I have a giant sock monkey I got two years for Christmas. I brought him up to put in my dorm, but one day I came in to find that my roommate had dressed him up in my clothes!  This turned into a recurring event, and its always amusing to see what outfit my friends will put together for him.  Here are some of his top looks:

Enjoy!
