Watacheza – Let Them Dance

Watacheza – Let Them Dance

For a good part of the semester, I along with the executive board members of African Student Alliance and AfroDescent have been planning this event for the Loyola community that will take place tomorrow!

Watacheza (Swahili for “they will dance”) is an event where we are offering free African dance classes, a cultural component with Minianka Dance Ensemble, and great food and music! We wish to end the year right with sharing our love for African dance with Loyola in Centennial Forum Student Union.

The classes we are offering are South African dance, West African drum and dance, and Khaleeji belly dancing (North African style).

I am excited for this event because this is the first time we have done this, and with the help of the department of Student Activities and Greek Affairs, this would not have been possible. They have helped us with every step not only with this event, but with all our events we host throughout the year. By helping us stay on top of space reservations, performers contracts, catering, and promoting, we come to these events with a good turnout.

The good turnout makes all this planning worth while, along with those who are not familiar with African culture to walk away with something new. That is what I am looking forward to on Saturday!

Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt

I’m the Co-Chair of Fellowship for Alpha Phi Omega. I felt that it was time the pledges paired up with the activities in a scavenger hunt  to build Brotherhood and show the rest of the fraternity how much they know about Loyola.

Here was the list of objectives:

All of the questions could be answered on the campus without the use of electronic devices. My favorite being that in 1963 Loyola men’s basketball beat Tennessee Tech. 111 – 42, for the national basketball championship. This score still holds a record for the largest margin of victory in an NCAA tournament game.

Here are some of the pictures that were sent in for the competition.

Random Stranger in the CFSU

There’s A She-Wolf In CFSU

There’s A She-Wolf In CFSU

This past week was spirit week at Loyola and there’s no better way to finish up the first week of classes than by petting a live wolf!

On Saturday, Loyola brought in two wolves to CFSU, the student union, and students had the opportunity to pet them. They had two, Shenoah and Zeus, and they were amazing!

We also heard about the animal shelter that they came from where they house nine pure bred wolves. The wildlife expert who brought them told us all about how wolves are a highly misunderstood animal. He explained that they never attack humans unless they are provoked and that the fear most of us have of them is based on legends, such as Little Red Riding Hood.

It was an awesome experience and an great opportunity to learn more about our beloved mascot!
