Preparing For Midterm Exams

Preparing For Midterm Exams

Hey Ramblers! Hope everyone had a good Valentine’s Day! Sadly though, the festivities cannot last forever, and as we get back to reality, we get back to midterms-already! In this post, I will be discussing some basic tips for studying, preparing for, and taking midterms!

I can’t believe midterms are here already! It feels like we only just returned from winter break and began the second semester! However, they are coming up, or for some like me, have already begun. I had two midterms on Friday and felt fairly prepared for them, so I am going to share with you some of my tips for studying and preparing!

First, for classes requiring terms to study, make flashcards! Whether you make them by hand or use a quizzing app such as Quizlet, flashcards are a great way to learn the terms and to quiz yourself to find the ones you don’t know and learn what you should study more! If the professor hands out a study guide, use it!! They are to your advantage! The professor is trying to help you, not hurt you! Speaking of professors, they are a wonderful source for questions or confusion. If you are unsure of a topic in your studying, shoot your professor a quick email or visit their office hours! They will be glad to help. Other students can also help in studying. If you have friends or classmates who may understand a concept, perhaps form a study group or ask them to help. Sometimes your peers can be your best source of information.

While studying, it is important to keep yourself from becoming distracted. Don’t listen to music with words, as it can distract your mind. Music without words can still be distracting for some, but to a lesser degree. Keep all electronics off or away, and if using your laptop to study, put Internet blockers on to keep you from accidentally surfing the web in a bout of distraction! Be sure to take a few study breaks though, to keep your sanity in check.

On the day of the test, be sure to get a good night’s sleep the night before so you are able to wake up on time and be in good spirits. Get a hearty and healthy breakfast, to ensure that your mind and body are awake and well fed ready to focus. Arrive a little early to your class to possibly get in a few extra minutes of looking over your notes, and make sure you have the proper materials needed for the test. Once the test is passed out, take a deep breath, and relax. Relaxation is important when taking a test. If you are too stressed out, it can lead to becoming distracted or forgetting things you do know if you just stopped to think about it! If you do these things, you will find that you have plenty of time during your test, and will be able to complete it feeling good and confident! ☺

All in all, exams are extremely important, but do not overly stress yourself out about them! By taking the extra steps to study and prepare, you will be all set to go on exam day. Best of luck on midterms, Ramblers!
