Things We Love About Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM

On September 8, 2012, our beloved Sr. Jean celebrated the 75th anniversary of her entrance into the Sisters of Charity, BVM. A member of the Loyola University Chicago community since 1961, Sr. Jean has inspired, ministered to, rooted for and loved our students and our University family tirelessly. What she lacks in vertical stature, she more than makes up for in her passion for and commitment to Loyola and the students we serve.

In addition to this site, the University is also hosting two receptions on Sunday, September 16 in Sr. Jean’s honor. Both receptions will occur on the Lake Shore Campus, in McCormick Lounge, with the first being held after the 10:30 a.m. Mass and the second occurring at 8 p.m., prior to the start of the 9 p.m. Mass.

On the Water Tower Campus, a special congratulatory banner will be hung outside Sr. Jean’s office, which is located in room 107 of the Corboy Law Center. Those that can’t make the September 16 receptions are encouraged to stop by her office to offer congratulations.

Carrol at the Welcome Center
I've always heard it is better later than never to say you are indeed an inspiration and joy to the Loyola campus and community. Just days ago a man walks into the Welcome Center from St. Catherine's Island wanting to know where he could purchase a bobble-head doll of Sr. Jean, "I've heard lots about her and her relationship to Loyola I'm a doll collector and I want a doll of her for my collection". After all of my efforts trying to locate a bobble-head doll I told him, she is an inspiration to the student, to the athletics team and to our community but I do not have a doll so I'll take your contact information and inform you when they are available. Warmly, Carrol

I'll never understand how you survived living with us in Coffey Hall. If you can survive that, though, OF COURSE you can survive anything. I'll love you forever for everything you did for me when I was having such a miserable time at home, and found my sanctuary in that building with you.

Sr. Jean, as my work-study supervisor while I was a Mundelein College undergrad, YOU were the one who first exposed me to academic administration when you assigned me to work in the Academic Dean's office and then the Weekend College office. Who could have known then that your good instincts helped fuel my passion for higher education for a lifetime? Thank you for mentoring me all these years and for the love and concern you bring to all of us at Loyola. Please know that love is many times returned. Happy anniversary!

Sr. Jean, it has been such a pleasure to get to know you over the past 6 years. I look for you when I am out and about on campus, and every time I see you it makes me smile. You have inspired me so much, and you remind me to enjoy every day. I wish that I had half your dedication, loving spirit, and energy. Lots of love and blessings to you as you celebrate your 75th Jubilee!

Dear Jean, You were a dear at Mount Carmel, and a great support at the Scholasticate. Your friendliness and kindness will never be forgotten. Thank you so much Sister Jean for helping me find the name and history of the nun who taught and inspired my grandmother so many years ago. It meant so much to her and to me and just demonstrates your commitment to helping others, no matter how small the task. Congratulations on this monumental achievement and God Bless.

Sr. Jean - You are such an inspiration to all! Thank you for being a special part of the Mundle Bundle years. Congratulations and Happy 75th Anniversary!

I'm new to the Loyola community, but one of the first things I learned about here was the woman whose reputation as a wonderful human being precedes her. Sister Jean, thank you so much for devoting your life to the Lord, the students, and everyone here who loves you so much. Your energy and palpable influence on this campus have made the transition easy and Loyola a great place to be.
Porter Moser
Sr Jean, Thank you so much for being an inspiration to not only our Men’s Basketball team, but the entire Loyola Community. In the crazy world of sports, with all the ups and downs, I want you to know how much I appreciate your uplifting emails. I treasure your post-game recaps. I need you to be my press agent because a loss is somehow always the referees fault! HA! Your smile is infectious and your positive attitude is contagious. You are truly a gift sent from God. And finally, congratulations to all of us on this board to have been lucky enough to be inspired, prayed for, and loved by you. All my best!
rick malnati
Sister Jean- They must be lying about your age because there is no way you could have been here 75 years when you move around like a 40 year old! Your spirit and enthusiasm are contagious and you are a blessing to this university and a special gift to the mens basketball program! Thanks for all you do for us.

She brightens my day, laughs with me in the shuttle line, and makes a great bobblehead! =) Thank you Sister Jean for all of your dedication and love over the years!
Terry McHugh Walters (Mundelein 1963)
Hi Sr. Jean Dolores, We began at Mundelein around the same time. You were a bundle of cheerfullness then and, according to these posts, you still are. Thank you for bringing that spirit of joy to Mundelein and then teaching us that there is life after Mundelein became part of Loyola! To see your photo in your Loyola sweater is a lesson to us all!
Karlie Mazur
Sister Jean! <3 You are THE CUTEST PERSON on this planet and quite possibly the most humble human being I know. The first time I met you last year was during a men's home basketball game and you approached our cheer team and asked if we can put you in a stunt and then told us how beautiful we all looked. Right then and there I knew the type of kindness you projected towards others and realized that I ned to start doing the same. You are truly and inspiration.
Chantal Mahler (Mundelein Class of 1989)
God bless you, Sister Jean, for all you've done and for all you've yet to do. You have a better memory than I do, more energy than I do and your infinite enthusiasm and warmth reminds me to keep striving to be a better person. You're a wonderful role model and an even better person. Congratulations!
Jon LeCrone, Commissioner, Horizon League
Sister Jean: I love it when you let me have it regarding poor officiating in the Horizon League. Of course that happens on any night that your beloved Ramblers are not doing well. I love that you are such a great fan and I always look forward to seeing you at the games. All the best!
Bridget Turner Kelly
Your inspiring words about what Loyola means to you were instrumental in making me feel connected to something larger. I cherish the memory of dining with you and the Sisters of the BVM with our young son. You are young at heart and have my warmest wish for many more years. Love and blessings untold to you.
Carolyn O'Connell
Sr. Jean, where do I start? Your calling and commitment to students is unparalleled at this University. You are truly a Mundelein/Loyola treasure. You have been a person of influence to not only students but faculty and staff as well. Now if you can only work your magic on those referees. I remember taking you to a memorial service and all the former Mundelein students there were so excited to see you saying "JD is here; JD is here"! I felt like I was with a celebrity rock star! You seem to see the God in everyone you meet which is truly an inspiration to me. I also love how you expect excellence from all our students yet are there to pick them up when they fall short. No one ever wants to let you down! You make us all better people by your very presence! You are an extraordinary educator and team chaplain and I am formally applying to be your apprentice! Love you!
Sylvia Brown-Hood (Mundelein Class 90-91)
Sr. Jean, I began my college journey with you at Mundelein and it was such a blessing to see you there cheering me on as I walked across the stage receiving my Master's Degree. The wisdom, love and peace that you possess and share freely is appreciated. You have been a consistantly positive influence, role model, mentor, teacher, advisor, prayer partner, and friend. I am so very thankful to God for allowing our paths to cross and for the opportunity to have known and experienced you. I pray you many more wonderful anniversaries and that God gives you added strength to keep on doing what you do. There's so many more that need to experience YOU. God bless and see you around campus. Love you much!!!
Pam Leibfried
Sister Jean, in working as a student aide in your office, I saw first-hand how devoted you were to your students and their success, both academically and personally. And 20 years after my graduation, it meant the world to me that when you heard I had breast cancer, you tracked me down and called me to remind me that you had been treated for breast cancer the semester before I started working for you, and you were still going strong. Your support and your prayers were a comfort during a very trying time. You are the embodiment of everything that I love about the BVMs and about Mundelein!
Liz Humphries
Congratulations, Sr. Jean! Your presence at Loyola is infectious and I can't begin to tell you enough about the positive impact you have in Regis, our residents and staff speak volumes of you. Thank you for all that you do for our community!
Dee (Green) Gunn - Mundelein College '85
Sr.Jean, If it had not been for your belief in me, a 16 year old high school drop-out applying to Mundelein College in 1980, I would not have gone to college, certainly would not have graduated and probably would never have grown to have any faith in my self. You are an amazing woman and have played a part in my life that is irreplaceable. I cannot imagine how much love and faith you have sown in 75 years!
Judy Landecker
Attending Mundelein in the early 80's as a single mom with 2 teenage daughters, I was called away suddenly on registration day for a death in the family. Sister Jean you were so kind and comforting as you told me you would take care of the registration for me in my absence. Thank you for all of your kindness! You always made Mundelein a loving place for me.
Katie Osberg
We are all blessed and honored to know you. You have enriched so many young lives and we are eternally grateful! I admire your dedication and commitment to Loyola University. Finals week was always made better because of the prayer you shared with me. Thank you so much and God bless!
Kathy Kennedy Samson
Sr. Jean -- I was a Northlander through-and-through but was always a little jealous of Coffey Hall residents because they had you. Both Northland and the adjacent apartments, which housed the Coffeehouse, are gone now, along with Damen Hall, but late '60s memories linger. Congratulations on your many years of helping students at both Mundelein and Loyola. - Kathy Kennedy Samson, Mundelein Class of '71
Terri Thomas

Your grace, kindness and spirit have made such an impact on so many people, transforming Loyola into a home for many of us – faculty, staff and students. I am always struck by your authentic joy and your unyielding dedication to helping everyone you come across. Your support of students, your wise advice and your endless enthusiasm is extraordinary. Congratulations and thank you for spending so much of your time making Loyola a better place.

I first met Sr. Jean in 1996 when my campus ministry office was on the first floor of "Sky Building" (now Mundelein Center) and the "new" Mundelein College was on the second floor, and Sr. Jean worked there. She always was aware of students' needs and encouraged me as I got to know Loyola as a chaplain. Thank you, Sr. Jean! God Bless!
Kelly Silay
Happy anniversary, Sr. Jean! Thank you for being such a positive, warm light in my undergraduate - and now graduate - career at Loyola. Your bright smile and unending Rambler spirit have been a highlight of my time here. Whether you're in the shuttle line, at Mass, or serving at Finals Breakfast, it is a joy to see you and know you. Thank you for all you do both in your presence and hardwork. Loyola would not be the same without you!
Donna Curin
Sr. Jean you are a role model for all of us. I enjoyed the comment from a student who said you know everyone's name . . . you even remember my granddaughter's name! I have children whose names are cloudy! Congratulations on a vocation well-lived.

I will always remember our many talks when my struggles to achieve my dreams at Mundelein when it appeared to be more than I can bear. You kind words and direct words provided what it took for me to succeed. I thank you. 1982. I was so happy to see in church six month ago. You are that type of individual God put on earth to make the world a better world. God bless
Sean Barry
Sr. Jean, you are one of the main reasons that I can call Loyola a home. I still remember getting locked outside of Ignatius House with you before my very first day of classes. You were so warm and welcoming to me then, taking care to learn who I am. None of that has changed in the last three years. You still are one of the most caring people that I know and walking with you after morning Mass is something I always treasure. You've let me into your home as a part of your prayer group and you've always been so loving. Thank you for your powerful example, because you are one of the people I look up to most. May God continue to bless you, now and always.
Regina Woods
Sister Jeans is always smiling and inquirng about you whenever I saw her. She has a tremendous spirit!!!

Sister Jean Delores, in my entire lifetime, your friendship to me is the most profound. You had such a great impact on my life, you never gave up on me. You never gave up on me. You are the reason that after five years (1973-1978) of being away, I returned to Mundeline to complete my BA (1978-1979) degree. I have never forgotten you. I have many memories of the college years and you are associated with each and every one. There are no words to express how you made my life different. I survived, I thrived and I thank you for the difference you made in my world. Thank You so very much.

Sr. Jean Dolores, when I think back of fond memories and personalities from my days at Mundelein, know that you are included in my thoughts. You were always so pleasant and positive and left me with the expectation that if I ever had a problem I could go to you and together, we could work it through. For a reason I can't even explain, I always felt that you were in my corner. Congrats on your 75th anniversary! Loyola obviously loves you now, but for me you will always be a shining example of what made Mundelein excellent.

Sister Jean, I recently traveled abroad with a group of Loyola students on a medical mission trip and one student brought along one of the famous t-shirts from last year with your beautiful face on it. When our group leaders came across it, who were not from Loyola, they asked who this was and why she was on a t-shirt. There was resounding joy from every single student on the trip as we exclaimed it was the wonderful, sweet, welcoming, and always smiling Sister Jean, our pride and joy here at Loyola. This moment exemplifies how utterly adored by students and faculty you are here and we are so thankful for all the hard work and love you put into each day here. While I have only been here for 4 years, I know you have made the same incredible impact on students and those surrounding you for the past 75 years, as well as the wonderful years before that filled with Jerry in his red sweater as well. So, as long winded as this note is, I just wanted to remind you that you bring such joy and life to every individual in your presence, (even if it's just walking with you to the mail room!). Thank you for being you, you are truly wonderful in every way! Sincerely, Sam Elliott

Sr. Jean, congratulations on celebrating 75 years as a Sister. I sat next to you at the LU BBall games and saw 1st hand the wonderful gift you are to Lotola. Your opening prayers brought the Holy Spirit on board for each game. You often would go back and lead more prayers after the game. I know a few in your prayer group and hear how you are admired and have set their young minds on fire for the love of God. You were brought here for a reason and we thank God you were. Keep on wearing those cute Nike shoes designed for you and that great smile that shows us the face of Christ in you.
