‘Tis the Season of Giving to Others

In lieu of the typical career highlight posts, in the spirit of the holidays, this month we will feature ways to give back to the community around you. Social Work is a helping profession, but that unfortunately does not mean that everyone and every agency gets the help they need. This holiday season, think about ways in which you can get involved in your community to lend a helping hand.

Might I suggest reaching out to your local hospital to help bring in the holiday spirit? Perhaps participating in your local toy drive to help make sure all the children in your neighborhood have presents under their tree. Does your Church have holiday celebrations you can be a part of? Maybe your local food pantry is serving a holiday meal and they could use some extra hands.

If you’re in the Chicago area, check out Chicagocares.org for a whole slew of volunteer opportunities happening across the city. Volunteer opportunities range from homework help to ESL training to Senior breakfasts to game nights. Spots are limited to each opportunity, but there is more than enough to go around.

Whatever it is you choose to do this holiday season, just make sure you do with your heart and bring your joy. ‘Tis the season of giving, and there’s no better way to do that but by giving some of your time to help others.

Happy Holidays!
