1st Annual International LGBT Psych Conference
Did you know that this year marked the first international conference on LGBT psychology and other related fields? It took place on June 20-23 in Lisbon, Portugal, and our own Dr. Michael Dentato and Dr. Jeanne Sokolec attended and presented at the conference! They were accompanied by several Chicago-based colleagues (including Dr. Robert Cleve of the Chicago School for Professional Psychology and others from across the U.S. and internationally) to discuss LGBT issues at this conference.
Dr. Dentato was impressed by conference attendees’ commitments to LGBT human rights and equality; he conversed with colleagues from Turkey, Australia, Russia, and Egypt, among other countries. As Dr. Dentato shared with me, “while the U.S.-struggle for marriage equality continues, among other LGBT rights, there are even greater international struggles as recently evidenced in Russia’s expansion of anti-LGBT laws.”
Dr. Dentato found the conference to be groundbreaking, as colleagues and students alike convened in an expansive and broad LGBT discourse. His presentations included several papers on topics related to aging, coming out, sexual health and risk behavior, human rights, and a workshop on counseling queer clients.
