Celebrate Social Work!

Sometimes I feel like being a social worker is much like working on the stage crew of a musical. Both social workers and crew members play integral roles in the teams they are members of. Social workers help others sort through problems and find solutions that they otherwise might not have found. Stage crew members keep the show going by moving sets, drawing the curtain, cuing the lights, and doing all sorts of other tasks. Another key component that links both stage crews and social workers is their tendencies to be in the background. I have, on several occasions, heard both social workers and stage crew members complain that the hard work they do goes unrecognized by their peers.

Fortunately for social workers, our moment to shine is rapidly approaching. March is Professional Social Work Month! That’s right, we get an entire month to celebrate and recognize our field. And for all my fellow school social workers out there, March 4-10 is School Social Work Week! Not all of our colleagues will be aware of these holidays, however, so check out these links for some tips on how to bring awareness to social work!
