The School of Communication is pleased to announce the debut of SEEN/UNSEEN, a new exhibit that will be on display in our building throughout the spring of 2013.

SEEN/UNSEEN is the work of internationally-acclaimed photographer, Sandro Miller. Sandro has photographed advertising campaigns for some of the most notable brands including American Express, BMW, Coca-Cola, Nike and the US Army. His editorial work has appeared in many top publications and contributes regularly to non-profit and philanthropic organizations. This collection of pieces spans nearly 25 years of Sandro’s work, including images of American Bikers, Cuban Faces and Peering In: Photographs of an Overstimulated Society. Some of the pieces have been viewed in galleries and publications, while others make their debut in the School of Communication.

Join us on Thursday, March 21 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m in the SOC to debut the new exhibit and meet the photographer. Appetizers, wine & beer will be served.

The Student Showcase includes video or audio projects, websites or blogs, advertising or public relations campaigns, and published articles. School of Communication students may display work that he/she produced independently, as part of a class or group project, or as part of a student organization. This work will be displayed on tables in Regents Hall and applications can be found here.

The School of Communication will also host our Annual Honors Reception, recognizing top students in a variety of areas. Applications are available for the following awards:

Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication is happy to announce the date of our annual High School Digital Storytelling Workshop. This year’s workshop will be held from early evening June 16 – June 21, 2013 on Loyola’s Water Tower Campus.

The city of Chicago will serve as the backdrop for students to create digital media, live videos and web content. Taught by School of Communication expert instructors and mentored by Loyola undergraduates, students will leave the week with an exposure to emerging technology, university life and digital media skills. The five-day workshop is FREE to attend and includes accommodation and meals in our Water Tower Campus living space, the chance to use state-of-the-art equipment in Loyola’s own Convergence Studio and admission to local Chicago events. Come learn, work and live with the School of Communication this summer!

We are currently accepting high school sophomores or juniors (who will be juniors and seniors in the fall of 2013) for this exciting program. The School of Communication’s Director of Career and Internship Services recommends the following:

Before the Fair:

  • Research the Top 5 companies that you are interested in and then pick 3 additional organizations you don’t really know anything about

Where do you look for information?

  • Their websites and social media pages
  • Next? Google
  • Then? check out Hoovers, and Crain’s
  • Have a list of questions to ask the recruiters that shows you did your homework
    • Example:  I read about Ogilvy & Mather recently in Advertising Age, can you tell me more about the company’s leadership structure?
    • Practice your introduction
      • You want to give a firm handshake, make eye contact, smile and then introduce yourself
      • Example: Hello, I’m Matt.  I was glad to see that you would be here today.
      • Have your personal (otherwise known as “elevator”) pitch ready to go
        • Remember:  You want to cover your major, skills, related projects and what you’re looking for
        • Example:  “I’m Tania Smith, a junior in advertising/PR. I’m looking for an internship related to marketing communications for next summer. I read on your web site that (name of company) has an internship program in your marketing communications department. I’ve done some project work that I believe is related to the internship work and I’m very interested in your program.”
        • Check and double check your resume – make sure it’s in great shape
          • 1 page, free of typos, 11 or 12 point font, Times Roman or Arial, White or Cream Paper
  • Professional Dress – Employers ‘qualify’ candidates and sort out who rolled in for the goodies and who’s serious about a job opportunity
    • Nice pants, shirt/blouse and dark dress shoes should get the message across
    • Avoid a Club/Date Look: Flashy jewelry and revealing clothing takes away from the one thing you want employers to pay attention to: your skills and qualifications

At the Fair

  • Practice your introduction at a few companies you are somewhat interested in to work out the kinks before you approach your top choices.
  • Know that Employers Observe candidates as they are talking to other companies — Remember to be consistent
  • Four go-to questions to ask:
    • What are the traits and skills of people who are the most successful within your organization?
    • Why did you come to work here? What keeps you here?
    • What things have your company accomplished of which you are especially proud?
    • What are the next steps in the recruiting process?  When can I follow up?
    • Get the recruiter’s business card at the close of your meeting and make sure to say thank you!

After the Fair

  • Organize all the material you received
  • Write thank-you letters – Recruiters are expecting them!
  • Send within 24 Hours.
  • Your letter should again demonstrate how you would be a “good fit”
  • Make follow-up phone calls
  • Depending on what the recruiter said regarding how and when to follow-up.
  • Call the recruiter to ask about the status of the search

So many employers want to meet you that we’ve outgrown our space on campus and we’ve moved just up the street to the Knickerbocker Hotel at 163 E. Walton, across from the Drake.

Luckily, the SOC and the Career Center have a lovely event planned to help you with that transition.  You’re going hear a lot about first impressions during the job-hunting process.  Nailing a first impression is not to be taken lightly.  55% of a person’s opinion is determined by physical appearance, and as for first impressions, they are formed within about 12 harsh seconds.  Next Thursday, Career Week 2013 is taking a little break from workshops and resumes to show you how to tailor yourself on a student budget.

Nervous?  Don’t be.  That combination of questions above is, simply, the result of a Google search on the most common job interview questions.  Upon being called in for an interview, you might find yourself consulting Google and/or skimming the pages of this year’s bestselling job-hunting guide.  Studying testimonials and committing ‘the best answers to job interview questions,’ to memory is fine, but try to remember that a job interview is not a test; it’s a very important conversation that you can practice for.

In prepping for interviews, practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect, however it can increase confidence.  You can practice for these interviews anywhere; in front of the bathroom mirror, in the kitchen with your roommates, in the elevator with strangers, or more specifically, in Regents Hall with real industry professionals next Wednesday from 4-6pm.
