Phil Ponce to host forum assessing Obama

Phil Ponce
Chicago Tonight anchor Phil Ponce and a panel of distinguished journalists and commentators will discuss media coverage of President Barack Obama at Promises Kept/Promises Broken: The Media’s Midterm Assessment of Barack Obama, an upcoming forum at Loyola University Chicago. The free event, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 14, will feature:
- Mary Mitchell, columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times
- Paul Green, Director-Institute for Politics, Roosevelt University and political analyst for WGN radio.
- Alden Loury, publisher of The Chicago Reporter, an investigative bi-monthly focusing on race and poverty issues in metropolitan Chicago.
- Dan Miller, a policy advisor at the Heartland Institute, the Chicago-based free market think tank.
.
Panelists will discuss some of Obama’s accomplishments, including passage of sweeping health care reform and new Wall Street regulations. But they also will take a critical look at Obama’s ongoing efforts to improve the economy, his steps to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his still-unfulfilled promise to reform U.S. immigration policy. Underlying the discussion: an assessment of how the media have covered the Obama presidency and the extent to which the media have been fair in holding him accountable.
Ponce hosts the news affairs program, Chicago Tonight, on WTTW11 and is a Distinguished Professional in Residence in Loyola’s School of Communication. In addition to teaching at Loyola, Ponce hosts an annual fall forum exploring critical issues in journalism.
The forum will be held at Loyola’s Water Tower Campus in Kasbeer Hall, on the 15th Floor of Corboy Law Center, 25 E. Pearson Street. Admission is free and open to the public, and there will be complimentary refreshments. The event is sponsored by the School of Communication and Loyola’s Student Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
