First off I want to say congratulations to last years Clinical Laboratory Science graduates who have all landed full time jobs at: Loyola University Medical Center, Rush University Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic.

A brand new school year, a brand new group of students coming into college with expectations and a completely different outlook on life from what we as college students experienced. With this in mind, every year for the last several, I look forward to seeing what the new freshmen have been influenced by of course, checking the World Wide Web. So I present to you here, the Top Ten from this years Beloit College Mindset List for the college Class of 2015.

There has always been an Internet ramp onto the information highway.

Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson could be their parents.

States and Velcro parents have always been requiring that they wear their bike helmets.

The only significant labor disputes in their lifetimes have been in major league sports.

There have nearly always been at least two women on the Supreme Court, and women have always commanded U.S. Navy ships.

They “swipe” cards, not merchandise.

As they’ve grown up on websites and cell phones, adult experts have constantly fretted about their alleged deficits of empathy and concentration.

Their school’s “blackboards” have always been getting smarter.

“Don’t touch that dial!”….what dial?

10. American tax forms have always been available in Spanish.

Some of my other personal favorites include:

28. Jimmy Carter has always been a smiling elderly man who shows up on TV to promote fair elections and disaster relief.

30. Dial-up is soooooooooo last century!

56. They’ve always wanted to be like Shaq or Kobe: Michael Who?

60. Frasier, Sam, Woody and Rebecca have never Cheerfully frequented a bar in Boston during primetime.

Check out the entire list and lists from years past at: http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2015/

This week, laboratory professionals across the country celebrate National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. While not as well know as some other week long celebrations, the individuals that are behind the scenes in the hospital laboratory are some of the most interesting people around.

We provide the important diagnostic results that make healthcare what it is today. I know what you are thinking, doctors and nurses drive healthcare, that’s because everyone sees a doctor or nurse when you come to the hospital. They interact with patients, they make the clinical diagnosis. After all, they are the ‘stars’ of all those medical dramas on tv.

I invite you to watch this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0OZfMzxU-o to see healthcare from a different point of view.

Laboratory Professionals Get Results

In celebration of the “spring forward” weekend – if in fact there is cause for celebrating the loss of one hour sleep – is that spring gives a renewed sense of what is possible and the extra energy to go and do things that we don’t want to do in the winter. One of these things is to contemplate going back to school – whether it be for personal enrichment or for a career change, spring is the time for a renewal of what can be done, what should be done and what the future holds.

One such option is to look at career track education. Everyone has seen articles touting the “6 best careers” or “10 highest paying jobs” in major media publications. You click on such articles in anticipation of what it may say, and then see that you need more or specialized schooling to get into these jobs. Don’t despair – these jobs are not out of your reach. Schools and training programs are waiting for you. Here at Loyola, we have many options. Let’s look at healthcare.

One such list, the latest US News and World Report lists healthcare as an always viable field – check out the healthcare part of the list at: http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2010/12/06/best-careers-2011-healthcare-jobs

Third on this years list is “laboratory technician” a rather generic term liked and used by mass media to describe the laboratory professional that works in hospital and other diagnostic testing facilities. In future postings, I will hope to clarify the various levels, names and responsibilities of those dedicated professionals in the laboratory and how laboratory professional make a difference in the healthcare field.

Just remember this – you don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to work in healthcare.
