The post-baccalaureate curriculum, approved by the American Bar Association, leads to a Corporate Practice Certificate in Paralegal Studies, the first specialized certificate developed by the Institute.

The north and west suburbs of Chicago are home to over 200 corporations. The Corporate Practice Certificate focuses on skills required of paralegals who work in corporate law departments and in law firms serving corporate clients.

Paralegals are helping corporate law departments to control costs—the highest management priority of law department leaders. This was one of the findings in the 2012 Chief Legal Officer Survey by Altman Weil, a leading legal management consulting company. Thirty-six percent of the 204 general counsel respondents reported shifting in-house work from lawyers to paralegals or other paraprofessionals. Twenty-five percent said they planned to increase their paralegal workforce within the next 12 months. Greater use of paralegals and other paraprofessionals was rated second priority, behind greater use of technology tools, as yielding improvements in efficiency over the past year.

The Corporate Practice Certificate courses cover contracts, commercial transactions, due diligence, regulatory compliance, business entities, securities regulation, and intellectual property. Litigation and e-discovery are also included.

Twelve courses must be completed to earn the certificate. These courses are offered in Vernon Hills in a cohort format, two courses during each of six 8-week sessions (about 14 months total). The cohort that started in January 2013 will be finished in March 2014. A second cohort is planned to start in June 2013 and finish in July 2014.

Please visit the Institute website (www.luc.edu/paralegal) for more details. Register here for the information sessions that will be held at the Cuneo Mansion on Tuesday, April 2, and Wednesday, May 8.

On Saturday, October 13 the Institute for Paralegal Studies will be hosting a Basics of Project Management Workshop at the Loyola Water Tower Campus. This 4 hour workshop will introduce you to project management, and the skills required to successfully manage projects. It begins with an introduction explaining why project management is being increasingly used by organizations. Then, participants will break up into teams, and complete a project that illustrates the hands-on issues pertaining to all projects.

The remainder of the workshop will provide students with an overview of the tools and techniques that project managers use in project planning, monitoring, scheduling and control. The workshop will conclude with a discussion about how project management principles and techniques can be applied to the legal environment.

The instructor, Tim Mojonnier, is President of Mojonnier & Associates, a management education and consulting company based in the Chicagoland area. Mr. Mojonnier’s first experience in project management was at FMC Corp., a $3 billion global corporation. There he managed a 5-person project team, developed a project plan, created a project schedule, monitored and controlled performance, and successfully implemented a turnkey business system at the Beverage Equipment Division.

These workshops are open only to alumni or current students of the Institute for Paralegal Studies at Loyola Chicago.

CM/ECF is the web-based software used for filing litigation documents in the Northern District of Illinois federal court system. This course will show you the best practices for managing your firm’s CM/ECF account and for filing your litigation documents. Learn how to file new complaints, answers, exhibits, motions, notices of motions and responses to motions.

Since the spring of 2010, Loyola University Chicago has been teaching CM/ECF in the Civil Litigation III course. If you have taken Civil Lit III during that time, this workshop will cover the same material and will be a good refresher for you. If you took Civil Lit III before 2010, or if you are in the Corporate / Real Estate concentrations and would like to broaden your skills to make yourself more marketable, this free seminar will be ideal for you.

This course is currently only open to Loyola paralegal graduates and current Loyola paralegal students. Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products prior to taking this short course.

Spaces are limited, so be certain to send an email to paralegal@luc.edu to reserve your spot today!

The other, and my favorite, a modern murder mystery. Good food, good drink, good book, good friends! Guests and non-alums are welcome to join us.
