My partner and I visited the D family on March 1st-a Tuesday. We ususally go on Sunday afternoons so this day had a different dynamic. Mrs D immediately served us some rice and dried bean mixture. It was oddly crunchy but very yummy. The young nephew/grandson was watching old christmas cartoons on the internet. It was fun to all be laughing over the same comedic antics. Mr D was gone that day as well, we have only met him once. The two younger kids were in and out. So we just played Jenga with the young nephew and daughter in law. It was a fun time because that game is easy to understand even with a large language barrier. We also got a chance to go to the grocery store with the son and his sister-in-law. It was eye-opening to see how they navigated their food stamp/Link purchases. We helped them pick out some of the things they needed. It was also kind of fun to get out of the house with them. We came back and played Jenga a little more.
It feels like things are starting to become more relaxed as they get used to us coming over. They don’t seem too phased by people coming in and out and they also didn’t seem too put-off by just playing a game with them. I think we will do that every so often just to get to know them a little better. When we visit them next I think we will work on some family tree type activity so we can get to know who belongs to who. I am also looking forward to just spending time with their family because they are very welcoming people and are very upbeat given their circumstances.
