Comfortable on the Other Side of the World

So, we have now been with the family for several weeks, and are really starting to get comfortable with each other. The family consists of two brothers, each with wives and kids, and a grandmother, not exactly sure whose mother she is though. I originally thought the only English speakers are the kids and the one father. However, as of Wednesday I realized that the wives know a little bit of English as well, it just seems like they are a bit hesitant to use it. While Denise and I sat down to watch our routine Nepali movie and enjoy an interesting meal, (pickled goat may or may not have been involved) I heard the one mother practicing the alphabet while looking at a beginner’s English book, with pictures of food. I think they are still a bit shy about their English and hesitant to use in, because they do not want to mess up the language. But, since Denise found a couple great phrase books, and we are attempting to use some Nepali, they might start trying to use English. I was just happy to see that they were learning and hopefully we will be able to help them out, as they get more comfortable with us. Every time we go, it feels like we are really becoming part of the family’s routine, I really like how comfortable I am with them. But it does make me nervous for the end of class, and their understanding of our position as the “kid’s tutors” and what that means in terms of continuing to visit twice a week, as we are now. But, there’s still plenty of time to figure that out, I am just focused on helping out with whatever we can and really just enjoying their company.
