Loyola’s School of Communication
Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Series of year-long events planned to commemorate
school’s accomplishments and alumni

Chicago, September 5, 2018: Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication celebrates its 10th anniversary with a slate of events to last throughout the 2018-19 school year. The yearlong celebration will include special events for the 40th anniversary of WLUW-FM 88.7, Loyola’s student-run radio station, and the 50th anniversary of The Loyola Phoenix, the university’s student newspaper.

The School of Communication opened in the 2008-09 school year in a new high-rise at Loyola’s downtown Water Tower Campus. Currently, the school features a state-of-the art television studio, the latest in video cameras and audio equipment, multiple computer labs, and a lab focusing on video game research.

“We teach our students how to do research, conduct interviews, and write in a clear and compelling way. Then we train them to tell their stories on film, on television and radio, in print, and on the internet,” said John Slania, acting dean of the School of Communication.

The school has undergraduate majors in multimedia journalism, film and digital media, advertising and public relations, and communication studies. There are also two graduate programs in digital media and storytelling and global strategic communication.

“Our goal is to graduate students who can share their talents and contribute to the world in a variety of meaningful ways,” continued Slania. “Our dedicated faculty and staff are proud to have educated, trained and inspired students over the past decade. These alumni are now accomplished professionals with successful careers at organizations such as The New York Times, PBS, ABC News, Edelman, Leo Burnett, and Golin.”

Events planned to celebrate the anniversaries include:

WLUW 40th Anniversary Kick Off Concert: Friday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. Free concerts on the East Quad featuring Deeper, The Slaps, and The Valley, plus live art and the chance to win a trip to Iceland.

10th Anniversary Art Opening: Thursday, Sept. 13 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A new art exhibit on international advertising in the School of Communication lobby.

Puppy Pop-Up: Wednesday, September 19 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Come play with adorable shelter puppies in the School of Communication lobby.

10th Annual Octoberfest: Friday, October 26 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Brats, beer, and music in the School of Communication outdoor courtyard.

Giving Back with the SOC: The month of November is devoted to a food drive and other charity events as the School of Communication honors the Jesuit social justice mission.

WLUW Alumni Takeover: Alumni join DJs at WLUW to return on air the month of February to reminisce and play their favorite music.

10th Anniversary Bash: Friday, February 22, 2019. 10th Anniversary gala in Wintrust Hall.

According to Slania, “As we host this series of events to mark our 10th anniversary, we will pause briefly to look back on our accomplishments. But given the constant changes taking place in the field of communication, we don’t plan to rest on our laurels. We have a duty to continue to deliver a progressive, high quality education to our students, developing them into the communication leaders of the future.”
