Loyola University Chicago Announces Annual
Summer on the Plaza Schedule
Farmers Market, Concerts, Performances, and More
Starting June 8

CHICAGO, June 8, 2015 – Loyola University Chicago’s second annual Summer on the Plaza programming kicks off today, Monday, June 8 at the Loyola Plaza, 6550 N. Sheridan Road in Rogers Park, just outside the CTA’s Loyola ‘L’ stop.

Running June through October, events will include local musical acts, food trucks, performance groups, a variety of programs for children and families, and the University’s farmers market. Summer on the Plaza is presented in partnership with Rogers Park Business Alliance and Sheridan Road Special Service Area.

A neighborhood favorite, the Loyola Farmers Market returns for another year of providing fresh, nutritious, and locally grown and produced foods to the surrounding community. The market is open Mondays, 3–7 p.m., from June 8 through September 21. Fall hours, 2:30–6:30 p.m., commence on Mondays from September 28 through October 12. New vendors this year include Farmer Nick’s, Pleasant House Bakery, and Loyola’s Retreat and Ecology Campus Farm. Loyola’s community health nursing students will also facilitate health and wellness sessions on a variety of topics related to local produce during the June market dates. Also similar to last year, Illinois Link cardholders who spend up to $10 can receive up to an additional $10 per market day, per card on Link-approved purchases.

“At this year’s Summer on the Plaza, we look forward to hosting new artists, diversifying our programming, and creating a celebratory and cultural experience for CTA commuters and our community,” said Summur Roberts, director of community relations at the University. “It is an honor partnering with the neighborhood to provide a vibrant, communal gathering place.”

Summer on the Plaza programming matches the vision and goals for the corridor of Alderman Joe Moore, Rogers Park Business Alliance, and Sheridan Road Special Service Area Commissioners.

“Rogers Park is home to a multifaceted professional artist community, as well as many unique, independently owned businesses,” said Sandi Price, executive director, Rogers Park Business Alliance. “We are excited to celebrate this local culture at Loyola Plaza, provide a destination for neighbors and visitors, and highlight our neighborhood’s restaurants, cafes, and beautiful beaches.”

Sean Connolly, Sheridan Road Special Service Area commissioner and Loyola staff member and alumnus, believes programming will also attract students.

“In addition to engaging neighbors of our University, Summer on the Plaza includes a variety of events that interest Loyola’s student population, who are always seeking entertainment near campus,” said Connolly.

In addition to the weekly farmers market, confirmed programming and entertainment includes: Joyce Renee & the JK Connection, The Rory Tyer Band, Blue Shag, Urban Rhythm, Greek clarinetist Jim Stoynoff, Wheel Jam Circus Arts, Glenwood Dance Studio, satellite bike clinics by Loyola Limited’s ChainLinks, and more.
