Remembering Mutahir Rauf

December 6, 2014

Loyola Community,

We are shocked and saddened by the tragic and senseless event that took the life of one of our students on Friday evening. Our entire community mourns the loss of Mutahir Rauf, a fellow Loyolan, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this devastating time. This was a senseless act of violence, and one that has absolutely no place in a civil society.

At present, our greatest concerns are for the family and friends of Mutahir and the safety of our Loyola, and greater, community. We welcome students, faculty, and staff to use the resources available to them to work through the suffering this tragedy has created. Over the weekend, our Wellness Center and Campus Ministry staff will continue to be available to Loyolans in need of their services. Specifically, Campus Ministry will hold special Sunday hours from 1:30-4 p.m., in room 217 of the Damen Student Center, for anyone wanting to talk about the recent violence near campus and around the world.

In the coming hours and days, we will join together as a University to honor the life of Mutahir Rauf and to start the healing process. Plans include:

Any future memorial service will be planned at the discretion of Mutahir’s family, who are making their way to campus now from overseas.

Currently, there are no suspects in custody. We continue to encourage the local community to come forward with any information that might lead to an arrest in this case. If you know anything about the incident, please contact the Chicago Police Department immediately via 9-1-1.

Sincerely,

Jane Neufeld
Vice President for Student Development
