Loyola University Chicago Hosts Jan Karski International Conference, Events
Festivities to Honor and Remember World War II Polish Resistance Figurehead

Loyola University Chicago’s interdisciplinary Polish studies program, the Jan Karski Educational Foundation, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago will sponsor Jan Karski Days in Chicago September 18–21. The celebration includes an international conference at Loyola on September 19–20. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, a former Karski student, will present Friday’s keynote address.

The September conference centers on Karski’s legacy, concentrating on two themes: memory and responsibility. The second day of the conference will be complemented by two film screenings and concert. The events at Loyola are free and open to the public. For more information, visit LUC.edu/polishstudies.

Born in 1914, Jan Karski is best known as “one man who tried to stop the Holocaust,” having worked as a courier for the Polish Underground witnessing German Nazi war crimes. He alerted the Allies, including President Roosevelt, about the atrocities in occupied Poland.

Author of Story of a Secret State, Karski later earned a PhD at Georgetown University and taught for 40 years at the school. Celebrating the centennial of his birth in 2014, the U.S. Senate passed a unanimous resolution honoring his legacy, and the Polish government declared it The Year of Jan Karski.
