2013 Illinois Family Business of the Year Award Winners Announced
Awardees to be Honored at November 21 Gala in Chicago
CHICAGO, September 19, 2013 – The Family Business Center at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business is pleased to announce the winners of its 20th Annual Illinois Family Business of the Year Awards. This awards program recognizes exceptional Illinois-based family businesses that demonstrate a strong commitment to business development, family, and the greater-Illinois community. An awards gala honoring the winners and finalists, as well as the tradition, dedication, and success of the family enterprise, will take place on Thursday, November 21, at 6:30 p.m., at The Four Seasons Hotel Chicago.
The 2013 Illinois Family Business of the Year awardees include:
- Small Family Business of the Year: Dicke Tool Co.
- Medium Family Business of the Year: Louis Glunz Beer Inc.
- Large Family Business of the Year: Glik Co.
- Community Service Award: Bearco Management Co.
- Dean’s Award: Graycor Co.
- Century Award: American Hotel Register Co.
The 20th annual awards drew nominations in six categories: small (companies with fewer than 50 employees), medium (50 to 250), large (more than 250), community service, dean’s award, and the century award. Winners of the awards have demonstrated positive family/business linkage, multi-generational family business involvement, contributions to industry and community, and innovative business practices and strategies.
This year the center introduced a new award, the dean’s award, which recognizes a family business excelling in social enterprise. The award is based on leadership initiatives in social enterprise and responsibility, supply chain management, or emerging markets.
“The Illinois Family Business of the Year Awards program gives us the opportunity to celebrate the incredible contributions of family business to our communities and our economy,” said Andrew Keyt, executive director of the Loyola Family Business Center. “The center is pleased to honor these dedicated families and their businesses as we celebrate 20 years of recognition.”

Small Business Category: Dicke Tool Co.
Dicke Tool Co. is a leader in worksite and emergency scene traffic control safety products that protect property and save lives. Founder Casper Dicke learned the tool-making trade in 1881 and built the company’s first plant in 1903. Vera Dicke is among the generations that have followed his lead. A former nurse who received her MBA at Loyola University Chicago, Vera earned Dicke Tool Co. its Women’s Business Enterprise certification in 2010. Today the company is known for its innovation, holding 36 patents in its field.

Medium Business Category: Louis Glunz Beer Inc.
Founded in 1888, Louis Glunz Beer is among the oldest beer distributors in the U.S. They worked vigorously to become the premier beer distributor to restaurants, bars, liquor, and grocery stores throughout Chicagoland. Generation four runs the business today with a keen sense of work/family balance, as generation five is being groomed for next-generation leadership. Recent honors include being named the 2012 Distributor of the Year by Beverage World magazine and the 2013 Wholesaler of the Year by Beverage Industry magazine.
Large Business Category: Glik Co.
In 1897, the Glik Co. was a single menswear store. Today they are a high-end, name-brand, apparel and footwear chain with 61 stores in nine states. The family’s marketing, buying savvy, and personal service have helped them survive and thrive in a tight retail environment for more than 116 years. Creating a socially conscious and sustainable business has earned Glik Co. its reputation for an honest approach to retailing at a fair price. Generations two, three, and four can look forward to vast opportunities in the family business.

Community Service Award: Bearco Management Co.
The Bearco Management Company’s Bear Family McDonald’s Restaurants have sought to differentiate themselves since 1967 by taking the fast food dining experience up multiple notches. Their made-to-order, high-quality food, comfortable interiors, and professionally dressed staff set them apart. As an outstanding corporate citizen, they have always shared their successes. From contributing to school programs, hospitals, and community centers, as well as participating in fundraisers and serving on community boards, the Bear Family Restaurants have shown the community that they can always be relied on for support.

Dean’s Award: Graycor Co.
Three generations of the Gray family have run Graycor since 1921. Today the company is known as the leading provider of construction, maintenance, and facilities services for major corporations throughout North America. Graycor’s motto: “Wanted: A hard job,” has clearly been achieved, and has allowed them to continually expand their business to better meet their clients’ needs. Now in its 90 year, Graycor continues to shine with a host of construction and maintenance services and wide range of socially conscious and sustainable business practices, including solar-power initiatives, LEED certification, and work-life commutes for employees.

Started in 1865 as a publisher of hotel travel directories and railroad maps, American Hotel Register Co. has continually adapted over the past 148 years to become the largest national distributor of hospitality products today.
