Loyola University Chicago’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability Expands with New Academic Institute
State-of-the-Art Facility Unveiled at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Open House

What:
Loyola University Chicago’s Institute of Environmental Sustainability, the first academic program of its kind in the Midwest, officially debuts Friday. The institute will prepare students for careers in policy, land management, conservation and restoration, environmental science, business, sustainable food systems, and public health care, making them responsible stewards of our environment and its resources.

The institute is headquartered in a new, state-of-the-art facility on the Lake Shore Campus that includes clean energy and biodiesel production labs, a green house, two aquaponics systems, an Ecodome, classrooms, and a 412-bedroom residence hall. Designed by architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB), the Institute’s new home boasts a number of cutting-edge sustainable features, including the largest geothermal heating and cooling installation in Chicago, rainwater harvesting, and high-efficiency heat-recovery technology.

Noon – Ribbon Cutting and Dedication by President Michael Garanzini, S.J.; Governor Pat Quinn and other political dignitaries are expected to attend

Note: Loyola, SCB, and the Peggy Notebart Nature Museum are hosting an Urban Food Symposium on Saturday, September 7, at the institute. Thought leaders from across the nation will explore social justice, environmental, and nutritional issues of food systems and offer innovative ways to approach local, alternative solutions.
