Loyola University Chicago Presents
22nd Annual McElroy Memorial Shakespeare Celebration

Event Explores Shakespearean Themes Through Lecture and Performance

Loyola University Chicago presents the 22nd Annual McElroy Memorial Shakespeare Celebration, which combines lecture and performance to explore major issues in Shakespearean performance, theory, and criticism.

This year’s event is entitled “What, has this thing appear’d again to-night?”: Spooky Shakespeare, Memory, and 9/11.” Several scenes from Hamlet, Macbeth, and Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy will be directed by Ann Shanahan, associate professor of theatre at Loyola and performed by Loyola students and professional actors Henry Godinez and Larry Yando. The lecture will be given by Dr. Kevin J. Wetmore Jr., associate professor and chair of theatre arts at Loyola Marymount University. Wetmore has been involved in several Shakespearean productions, and has published numerous books and articles on theatre, performance, English Renaissance drama, and Japanese theatre and culture.

The celebration is free and open to the public. It is presented by Loyola’s departments of English and theatre and held in honor of the late Bernard McElroy, a former English professor at Loyola. For additional information, visit http://mcelroycelebration.wordpress.com/.
