Earth Night with the Arts
Launches Weekend of Earth Day Celebrations
Loyola University Chicago, Burners Without Borders, and the Chicago Art Department (CAD) have teamed up to host the seventh annual Earth Night with the Arts: Planet Art School (also titled eARTH Night VII) on the evening of Friday, April 15, in the University’s Mundelein Center. The night’s free activities are in honor of the surrounding community’s fight to save the earth, and to kick off the North Lake Shore Earth Day festivities, which take place on Saturday, April 16, at 10 a.m.
Earth Night with the Arts will give participants the opportunity to work with accomplished artists and collectives in creative workshops that will highlight our connection to the planet. Live music by local musicians will provide the backdrop for screen printing, collage, paper-making, a stop-motion animation studio, and an environmental guilt writing workshop (a special prize will be awarded for the Funniest Confession).
The community group Art Forward will guide participants in painting murals that will be used to decorate the board-ups of foreclosed and abandoned houses in the neighborhoods of Lawndale and Garfield Park. This work is an effort to beautify public spaces and encourage civic engagement through art. The Rebuilding Exchange, Chicago’s first building material reuse center, will also be donating materials for a collaborative trash sculpture.
